Jay School Corporation is committed to holding a prom and graduation ceremony, eventually.

Indiana’s primary election has been postponed.

Those were the latest developments in light of the coronavirus pandemic Friday, the day New York and Illinois joined California in ordering residents to stay home indefinitely with exceptions for essential jobs, errands and some exercise.

Jay Schools superintendent Jeremy Gulley announced his commitment to prom and graduation during a pre-recorded address to the community that was released Friday afternoon.

“We’re going to have a prom and commencement,” he said. “It may not be when we would normally have it. But we’re not going to give up on the memories our kids deserve. …

“This goes through May 1, this school closure. It may have to go longer. We don’t care how long it’s going to take. We’re going to have prom and commencement.”

Gulley also announced updated plans for food service.

Monday and Tuesday will follow the same pattern as was used this week, with meals for all students available for pick-up from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Jay County High School, East Jay Middle School, Westlawn, Redkey and Bloomfield elementary schools and the former Pennville Elementary School.

Beginning Wednesday, the corporation will incorporate bulk feeding (five breakfasts and five lunches in one package) for “country kids.” Those meals will be delivered to homes on regular out-of-town bus routes. Families who may not be available when those meals are delivered are asked to provide a cooler for them to be left in.

“It won’t go perfect the first time,” Gulley said in his updated information. “We will have a plan for those we missed the first time around.”

“Town kids” will continue to receive meals on the regular schedule Wednesday and Thursday before bulk feeding begins Friday. Those meals will be available at the same times and locations Friday, with the exception of Bloomfield.

Those who would like to receive meals are asked to fill out an online food service form — bit.ly/JCfoodservice — by 8 p.m. each day, but Gulley emphasized that no child will be turned away.

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb announced the election postponement during a press conference late Friday morning. The primary, which was scheduled for May 5, will now be held June 2. Voter registration and early voting dates will also be moved as determined next week by the state election division.

“My plea and my hope is that we all understand the gravity of what is surrounding us on a 24-hour, minute-by-minute basis,” Holcomb said. “The more people who are practicing what we’re preaching, the faster we’ll get through this.”

Also Friday, Jammie Bane of Delaware County Health Department announced that a case of COVID-19 had been diagnosed in Delaware County, The Star Press (Muncie) reported. The presumptive positive test has not yet been confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

There are also confirmed cases in Adams and Wells counties, but none in Jay or Mercer counties.

Confirmed case totals are 79 in Indiana and 169 in Ohio as of late Friday, but testing is limited.

“The more people who practice social distancing, the less likely we get to the point to where we have to mandate sheltering in place,” Holcomb said.

IU Health

IU Health announced Friday that it now has the capability to test for COVID-19.

Those who think they may need to be tested should still first use IU Health’s free virtual clinic at iuhealthvideovisit.org or the IU Health Virtual Visits app. COVID-19 testing must be ordered by a physician.

“The COVID-19 crisis continues to impact our communities in Indiana and abroad, and I want our patients to know we are here for them,” said IU Health president and CEO Dennis Murphy in a press release. “As more diagnostic testing resources become available, we will expand the number of patients we are able to test.”

FCC

FCC (Indiana), one of the county’s largest employers, announced Friday that it would suspend operations next week. Its facilities will be shut down March 23 through 27 and are projected to return to production March 30.

Assessor’s office

Jay County Assessor’s Office announced Friday that it will be mailing out personal property return forms beginning Monday. They are due May 15. Those with questions should call the office at (260) 726-4456.

Jay County Commissioners earlier this week closed all courthouse offices to the public. Visits are by appointment only.

Courts

Adams County Courts on Friday clarified that some court functions will continue but that no jury trials will be held through at least May 4. For hearings that do take place, those involved may be allowed to appear remotely and attendance will be limited to litigants, attorneys, staff and media.
