Hoosiers, stay home.

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb during an address Monday ordered Hoosiers to stay home except for essential workers or necessary trips for food and medicine.

The order goes into effect at midnight tonight and runs through April 7. Indiana will become one of 17 states with stay-at-home orders in place, including Ohio, Michigan and Illinois.

Shopping at grocery stores and picking up carryout food orders will still be permitted. The governor asked that Indiana residents shop only when they need to and only for what they need.

Indiana currently has 259 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and seven deaths while Ohio has 442 confirmed cases and six deaths. There are no confirmed cases in Jay or Mercer counties. Health officials continue to indicate that the actual numbers are likely much higher because testing for COVID-19 is still limited.

Those who think they may need to be tested for COVID-19 should first seek an initial screening. Those can be completed using IU Health’s free virtual clinic at iuhealthvideovisit.org or via the IU Health Virtual Visits app, or by calling Mercer County Health District’s call center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays at (567) 890-2619. COVID-19 testing must be ordered by a physician.

Jay School Corporation made updates to its food service plan Monday, noting that students picking up meals today would receive two breakfasts and two lunches in a single package. On Wednesday, bulk feeding — five breakfasts and five lunches in one package — will begin for “country kids” via regular bus routes. (Those who may not be present are asked to leave a cooler in which to place the food.)

On Thursday, “town kids” will be able to again pick up meals from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Jay County High School, East Jay Middle School, Westlawn and Redkey elementary schools and the former Pennville Elementary School. (Bloomfield Elementary School will no longer be a site as its students will have been served via bulk feeding the previous day.)

On Friday, bulk feeding will begin for “town kids” as they can pick up five breakfasts and five lunches from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the same sites.

Students are no longer required to be present in order to pick up meals.

Fort Recovery village administrator Randy Diller provided updates Monday, including that playgrounds, basketball courts, tennis courts, pavilions and shelter houses in village parks are now closed. The recreational trail remains open.

Village offices, including the police department, are closed to the public. Payments and paperwork can be delivered via a drop box near the front door of village hall. The police department has suspended all vehicle inspections. Trash and recycling services will continue as scheduled. Those with questions can call village hall at (419) 375-2530.

Fort Recovery preschool registration becomes available online at 7 p.m. tonight at fortrecoveryschools.org by hovering over “schools” and clicking on “preschool.” On April 8, the enrollment, physical and other forms will be mailed to newly enrolled students. For additional information, contact Mary Diller at [email protected] or (419) 375-4131.

IU Health Jay announced that its cashier/business office is now closed to the public. Payments will need to be made online. The hospital will also not be offering “direct access labs” — walk-in blood draws at a reduced price — until further notice.

Holcomb also ordered all state government offices closed after today and said state-issued driver’s licenses and vehicle registrations will be automatically extended. He also ordered that Indiana's Alcohol Tobacco Commission to suspend the food and beverage licenses of any establishment still allowing dine-in service.

The government closures include all WorkOne offices. (Those serving east central Indiana had already closed to the public but were available via phone.) Those who need to file for unemployment should do so by visiting unemployment.in.gov.

Jay County Public Library announced that it will halt its curbside pick-up service after today. Jay County Historical Museum is closed until further notice.
