Purdue urges: Get walking

Purdue urges: Get walking
Purdue urges: Get walking

Purdue Extension is launching an email-supported walking program that could help both your physical and mental health during the coronavirus pandemic.

Outdoor exercise by individuals — not groups — is allowed during Gov. Holcomb’s “Stay at Home” period.

Get Walkin’ starts March 30, and it’s free.

Participants will receive a total of 16 emails, two per week the first month, then one a week for the next eight weeks to help them stay on track.

Walking is a great way to reduce the risk of obesity, heart disease and diabetes.

To sign up, email Allison Keen of the Jay County Extension Office at [email protected] by March 27. Then go find some comfortable walking shoes.

Redkey cancels

The Redkey High School Alumni Association’s 2020 banquet, which had been set for April 25, has been canceled due to the coronavirus and will not be rescheduled.

The board of the Dunkirk High School Alumni Association also canceled its reunion.

Grant OK’d

The board of directors of The Dunkirk Foundation has approved a grant of more than $600 to Arts Place in support of the Arts in the Parks program. The grant was made possible by the Dunkirk Endowment Fund.

Prevention

Adams Memorial Hospital will be offering a diabetes prevention program starting April 30.  The program is specifically designed for people that have pre-diabetes or for those that believe they are at risk for diabetes or have a high A1C (5.7-6.4%).

The class series consists of multiple one-hour sessions starting on Thursday, April 30, at the Adams Memorial Hospital Strickler Cancer Institute in the Strickler Library.

The Strickler Cancer Institute is the building adjacent to Adams Memorial Hospital, Decatur. Two session times are being offered, a day session from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or an evening session from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

To register or get more information, contact Lisa McAfee, RN, at (260) 724-2145, extension 11107.  Participants must be 18 years old or older.
