Community Center adjusts calendar

Jay Community Center’s calendar has been undergoing serious revision during the coronavirus pandemic.

Plans currently call for the fitness center to reopen on May 26. A 5K run is slated for June 14, and senior programming is expected to resume on July 6.

T-ball is expected to start on July 11, and the deadline for registration is June 14.

The staff notes, however, that virtually everything is subject to change, depending upon guidance from the Indiana State Board of Health and the governor’s office.

Among the items still to be determined are 24-hour access to the fitness center, opening the walking tracks and gym, fitness classes, rentals and summer day camp.

The Mother-Son dance has been moved to May of 2021.

A number of fixtures on the community center calendar have had to be canceled entirely. Those include Boomer spring soccer, flag football and basketball as well as the men’s 5-on-5 league.

The annual Meeker Golf Outing will be rescheduled in either August or September.

Seeking votes

Jay County High School thespians are hoping to raise funds through the Drew Brees Foundation through what’s known as the Super Service Challenge.

To do so, they’ll need local supporters to vote for Thespian Troupe 574 at https://www.superservicechallenge.com/Video/Details/3215.

Retirees help

Volunteers from the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, the Indiana State Teachers Association and the American Federation of Teachers Indiana are providing a “Call and Learn” hotline to help students and parents during the pandemic.

The hotline is open every weekday from 1 to 5 p.m. at (877) 45-STUDY (877-457-8839).

After identifying the student’s grade level, middle and high school students are matched to educators with expertise in math, science, language arts and social studies, while elementary students are paired with general education elementary teachers. In compliance with stay-at-home guidelines, volunteers operate from their homes.

While calls are recorded to protect the students and volunteers, no identifiable personal information is collected, ensuring anonymity for both the child and educator.

Those interested in volunteering should call (888) 454-9333.
