Forty-three cases.

That’s Jay County’s new total for confirmed cases of COVID-19 after two new cases were confirmed Saturday.

The county had no new confirmed cases Sunday or Monday.

Indiana State Department of Health reported 354 new cases Monday, marking the first time since May 13 that the new case total was below 400 new cases.

Jay County has had 25 cases reported in the 22 days since stay-at-home restrictions began being lifted via Gov. Eric Holcomb’s Back on Track Indiana plan on May 4, an averaged of 1.14 per day. That’s up from 0.53 per day from the confirmation of Jay County’s first case March 31 through May 3. The availability of testing has also increased over that time period.

The county’s percentage of tests that have come back positive has hovered around 10% throughout the pandemic. It is currently at 10.5%, with 408 county residents tested as of Monday.

No Jay County residents have died as a result of COVID-19 thus far.

Delaware County continues to have by far the most cases in the area at 354. It is followed by Mercer County with 190, Darke (153), Randolph (40), Wells (23), Blackford (20) and Adams (12).

Marion County (Indianapolis) has 9,189 cases, accounting for 29% of the state’s total of 31,715. That’s down from 45% at the end of March.

Following Marion County are Lake (Gary) with 3,299, Cass (Logansport) with 1,582, Allen (Fort Wayne) with 1,277 and St. Joseph (South Bend) with 1,170.

The death total from COVID-19 in Indiana is 1,832, with 533 of those in Marion County.

The state has totaled 226,251 tests thus far, with a positive rate of 14%. It includes testing conducted by the state, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and private laboratories.

Those who have symptoms of COVID-19 or who have been exposed to the virus are encouraged to visit one of the 101 state-sponsored testing site.

Those include Meridian Health Services Convenience Car at IU Health Jay and its West Jay clinic in Dunkirk, as well as sites in Muncie and Winchester.

Coronavirus is spread through respiratory droplets from sneezes and coughs, close personal contact and touching something with the virus on it and then touching the mouth, nose or eyes before washing hands. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines encourage frequent hand washing, avoiding touching the face with unwashed hands, avoiding close contact with those who are sick, and covering coughs and sneezes with a facial tissue and wearing a mask in public.

For most, COVID-19 symptoms are mild to moderate, including fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. Older adults and those with pre-existing health problems are susceptible to more severe illnesses.
