Patriots travel to Delta for sectional game

Oct. 9 vs. Lapel: Big plays defensively and four turnovers crippled Jay County in a 43-15 loss to the Lapel?Bulldogs. The Patriots trailed 36-0 before scoring back-to-back touchdowns in less than four minutes. Quinn?Faulkner (79 rushing yards) had a 13-yard TD run, while Bailey Cox (76 yards)?scored on a 5-yard run.

Season leaders: Passing — Sam Dunlavy – 18-of-66 for 331 yards, one touchdown and six interceptions. Rushing — Bailey Cox – 117 carries for 593 yards and three touchdowns. Receiving — Sheldon Eley – seven catches for 203 yards and one touchdown. Defense — Rylee Huftel – 54 tackles, three tackles for loss and one interception.

Last week at New Palestine: Delta jumped on a fumble in the end zone to tie the game 7-7 in the first quarter but the two-time defending Class 5A state champion and fifth-ranked Dragons pulled away in the second quarter en route to a 28-21 victory against the Eagles. Delta’s Brady Hunt threw for 168 yards and a touchdown and also added 100 yards and a score on the ground. Evan Conley rushed for 144 yards.

Season leaders: Passing — Brady Hunt – 67-of-129 for 931 yards, 12 touchdowns and four interceptions. Rushing — Evan Conley – 101 carries for 681 yards and three touchdowns; Brady Hunt 101 carries for 475 yards and four TDs. Receiving — Trevor Edgerton – 21 catches for 401 yards and seven touchdowns. Defense — Logan Drown – 86 tackles and three sacks.



Last meeting: Jay County got as close as one point before halftime but had too many drives come up empty after intermission in a 28-19 loss to the host Eagles on Sept. 1, 2017. Junior Michael Schlechty had 100 rushing yards and quarterback Holton Hill threw for 121 yards and three touchdowns for the Patriots. Charlie Spegal had 206 rushing yards for Delta.

Game notes: This is the 46th meeting all time between Jay County and Delta, and the first since 2017. The Eagles have a 34-11 record against Jay County, including on-field wins in each of the last 27 meetings (the Eagles forfeited the 55-0 win in 2011 because of the use of an ineligible player) ... This is the quarterfinal round of the Class 4A Sectional 20 tournament, with the winner advancing to the sectional semifinal Oct. 30 against either the Huntington North Vikings (3-6) or Wayne Generals (1-8) ... Delta coach Chris Overholt is a former JCHS assistant coach. He was a lineman coach and offensive coordinator from 2008 to 2014 ... The Eagles, who finished 11th in the final Class 4A Associated Press poll voting, are four years removed from their ninth sectional in program history, while Jay County’s last sectional title came in 2007, which is also the last time the Patriots played for a sectional crown ... Delta boasts a Sagarin rating of 75.97, which is eighth in Class 4A and 42nd overall; Jay County (19.54)?is 55th in Class 4A and 264th overall ... John Harrell’s website predicts Delta to win 45-10, while CalPreps.com has the Eagles winning 61-0.
