A Redkey man charged with murder is back in Jay County.

Cory M. Jones, 43, 4285 S. 1000 West, Redkey, was transported back to Indiana on Tuesday and booked into Jay County Jail on a charge of murder early this morning.

Jones is charged with the Aug. 22 fatal shooting of Shanna Jones, 47, Dunkirk. He had been in custody in Martinsburg, West Virginia, since Aug. 25 awaiting an extradition hearing, which was held last week.

Jay County Sheriff’s Office responded to 10402 W. 400 South for a welfare check on Shanna Jones, the owner of the property, at 11:45 p.m. Aug. 22. The check came after a call from Ray Jones, the father of Cory Jones.

According to court documents, Ray Jones had told police his son said he accidentally shot Shanna Jones. Cory Jones then left Ray Jones’ home, later sending a text saying he was “going 110 mph toward Illinois.”

Police spoke with Natashia Jones, the daughter of Shanna Jones, upon arriving at 10402 W. 400 South. They then searched the property and found Shanna Jones laying face down with apparent injuries to the back of her head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Prior to being transported back to Jay County, sheriff’s officers traveled to Martinsburg to interview Cory Jones. He told the officers that he had been in Florida for the last three weeks, court documents say.

The documents also note that Shanna Jones was last seen leaving Pak-A- Sak, 9017 W. Indiana 67, Redkey, late on the evening of Aug. 22. She was with an unknown male at that time, and police believe he witnessed the shooting. Police are still attempting to locate that witness.

The U.S. Marshal Service’s Fugitive Task Force arrested Cory Jones on Aug. 25 in Martinsburg, about 75 miles west of Baltimore.

Court documents show that Cory Jones pleaded guilty to a Class A misdemeanor charge of battery resulting in bodily injury in 2008. He also has been found guilty or pleaded guilty to felony charges of burglary (1994) and auto theft (2014).

Indiana State Police is assisting the sheriff’s office and prosecutor’s office with the investigation.

In Indiana, murder carries a sentence of 45 to 65 years with an advisory sentence of 55 years.
