His effort helped the Patriots to their third straight win.

Marentes, a Jay County High School junior, recorded the first hat trick of the season Saturday in leading the Patriot boys soccer team to a 5-1 victory against the Centerville Bulldogs.

On Monday in Monroeville, Jay County had its winning streak snapped with a 3-0 loss to the Heritage Patriots. Jay County fell to 5-6 (0-2 Allen County Athletic Conference).

Marentes’ hat trick Saturday was his first three-goal game since scoring four times in a 10-4 victory against Blackford in the sectional opener last season.

Jay County and Centerville played to a scoreless first half before exploding in the final 40 minutes. Marentes pushed his season total to a team-high 11 goals.

Senior Gio Perod scored two goals as well, marking his second consecutive multi-goal game and the fourth of his career. Perod also had a pair of assists. Gavin Muhlenkamp, Carter Henry and Marentes each added helpers.



Boys beat Celina

CELINA, Ohio and PORTLAND — Two days after struggling in an invitational, the Fort Recovery boys golf team got a 187-198 win against the Celina Bulldogs on Monday at Portland Golf Club.

Carson Rammel led Fort Recovery (6-7) by shooting a 45. Derek Lochtefeld and Russell Gehle had matching scores of 46, and Zander Kunkler completed the team score with 50.

Cole Muhlenkamp (54) and Isaac LeFevre (56) also competed but they did not factor into the team score.

Celina’s Nate Boley earned match medalist honors with his 45.

On Saturday in the Jordan Moeller Invitational at Mercer County Elks Golf Club in Celina, the Indians shot 426 for 15th place.

Lochtefeld led the Tribe with his round of 99, and LeFevre was four strokes behind. Muhlenkamp was third on the team with 110, and Gehle` shot 114. Seth Lochtefeld ended with 124.

Shawnee won with 347.



Streak ends

CENTERVILLE — Jay County’s girls soccer team ended its skid Saturday by beating the Centerville Bulldogs, 3-1.

The victory ended a stretch of six straight games the Patriots (4-5-1) either lost or played to a draw.

Makiah Compton scored her first career goal for Jay County, which led 2-0 at halftime.

Eliza Bader and Gabi Bilbrey each had a goal and an assist for the Patriots, who host Delta on Tuesday.

Tricia Ison recorded one save in goal before giving up her spot to play the field. Angel Clairday notched three saves.



Tribe bounces back

ARCANUM, Ohio and BERNE — Fort Recovery High School’s volleyball team bounced back from a Midwest Athletic Conference sweep by New Knoxville on Thursday to pick up a pair of wins recently.

The Tribe (9-1), which dipped to No. 9 in the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association Division IV poll on Monday, beat the host Arcanum Trojans (25-14, 25-13, 25-20) on Saturday, then topped the South Adams Starfires (25-16, 25-22, 32-30) on Monday in Berne.

Paige Fortkamp had 19 kills in both matches, and Whitley Rammel had 11 kills against the Starfires. Marissa Gaerke totaled 13 kills against the Trojans and had eight kills on Monday.

Fortkamp also led the squad with 11 digs in each match.

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team also beat the Trojans 24-26, 25-11, 25-16, and topped the Starfires 25-21, 25-13.



Tennis swept

DECATUR — The Jay County boys tennis team got swept at the hands of the Bellmont Braves on Monday, 5-0.

Austin Dirksen made his No. 1 singles debut in the place of Crosby Heniser, who sat out because of an illness, and lost to Cole Shifferly 6-0, 6-0. Simon Dirksen lost a 6-4, 6-0 match to Mason Vrablic at No. 2 singles, and Abraham Dirksen fell at No. 3 singles to Charline Harris 6-0, 6-1.

The Patriots’ No. 1 doubles tandem of Frankie Crump and Gavin Myers fell to Preston Sterling and Gianni Smyriotis 7-6 (7-3), 6-1, while Darius Esparza and Sam Myers lost to Maverick Shifferly and Patrick Miller 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Jay County's junior varsity team also lost, 5-0.



Patriots fall

Jay County’s junior varsity football team dipped to 1-4 on the season with a 40-16 loss to the Bluffton Tigers on Monday.

The Patriots trailed 26-0 at halftime before scoring twice in the third quarter to get within 10 points. The Tigers put the game away with 14 points in the fourth quarter.

Parker Nichols completed 12 of his 17 pass attempts for 145 yards and two touchdowns. Justin DeHoff had three receptions for 52 yards and a TD, and Trey Nichols had 45 yards and a TD on four receptions.

Christian Runkle and Trey Nichols each had a 2-point conversion.

Bryce Wenk paced the defense with six tackles, including one tackle for loss.



Jay loses

MUNCIE — The Jay County Junior High School seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams both lost to the Delta Eagles on Monday.

The eighth grade team lost 25-23, 25-21 in falling to 6-3 on the season. Scores and stats for the seventh grade contest were not provided.

Kiley Williams led the eighth grade team with two kills. Brenna Bailey collected nine digs, and Jozey Shimp tallied three aces.
