HARTFORD CITY — The girls were first in every event but one. The boys had a strong showing in the opener, too.

Jay County High School’s girls and boys track teams opened their season Tuesday by topping the host Blackford Bruins.

The JCHS girls won 96-23, while the boys got a 70-53 victory.

Seniors Abby Benter, Kinsey Shannon and Sophia Fugiett were each dual winners for the JCHS girls. Benter took first in both the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles. Shannon won the 100 dash and 400 dash, while Fugiett beat the field in the 1,600 run and 800 run.

Also getting individual wins were Bralee VanSkyock (200 dash), Cash Hollowell (long jump), Elsa Parazzi (high jump), Kylie Klopfenstein (shot put) and Gabi Bilbrey (discus).

Natalie Wehrly, Makinsey Murphy, Shea Bailey and VanSkyock teamed to win the 4x100 relay, while Natalie Miles, Bailey, Benter and Shannon won the 4x400 relay.

Jacob Hart, Aaron Funkhouser and Isaac Kunkler all got a pair of wins for the Patriot boys. Hart had the top throws in discus and shot put, while Funkhouser finished first in the 100 dash and 400 dash races. Kunkler earned first place in 110 hurdles and high jump.

Adrek Pogue (200 dash) and Dylan Knapschafer (long jump) also had individual victories.
