To the editor:
Redkey Town Council is considering cutting the town’s third police officer position from the department and going back to two.
Crime is only getting worse and we need all the personnel we have. If anything, we need another officer, which will not happen.
Redkey police have to cover the town seven days a week with three officers. Redkey added the third police officer in the 1990s.
Check the towns around us that don’t have a police officer patrolling the streets. You will find that they have more drug problem, such as meth dealing and other crime going on.
Redkey police have done several search warrants and have taken a large amount of drugs off the street along with some handguns.
Redkey police department was the first in the county to carry NARCAN and administer it for drug overdose patients prior to medics arriving on the scene. This gives the patient just that much more of a chance for survival.
I don’t think it makes any sense to go back to two officers.
I sincerely hope that Redkey Town Council makes the decision to keep the third police officer.
I encourage Redkey residents to let the council know that we need to keep the police department as is.
I appreciate our officers. Keep up the good job that you do.
