A regional company donated a building to Hartford City to house city services.

Indiana Michigan Power recently donated its former service center to the city to be used as the new home of its police department and senior citizens center.

The site had been I&M’s service center for 52 years, ending that run in 2012. Indiana Michigan Power officially turned the keys over to the city Tuesday.

“Indiana Michigan Power and its more than two-thousand employees are committed to being good neighbors and recognizing the needs in our communities where we live and serve,” said I&M community affairs manager Rob Keisling in a press release. “The building donation sets Hartford City up for future growth while promoting community engagement, stability and a place to give back those who call Hartford City home.”

Internships complete

A group of 16 students recently completed their summer internships with Cooper Farms.

The interns, including Jay County High School graduate and Purdue University student Gabi Paxson, were assigned to all areas of the company, including live animal, food safety, technology and process improvement.

“These internships are a great thing for not just the students, but also our management group,” said chief operating officer Gary Cooper in a press release. “A large portion of our management team has been with the company for a long time, which is wonderful. The presence of these interns really helps us get a fresh and young view on things.”

BSU partnering

Ball State University on Thursday announced that it has become an official partner of The Esports Combine.

The combine is a recruiting event for esports participants. Ball State plans to integrate students taking part in its esports production concentration, who learn history, video production, streaming and broadcasting, into the combine.

“We are ecstatic to work with Harena Data and Indiana Sports Corp as an official partner of The Esports Combine,” said BSU dean of the college of communication, information and media Paaige Turner in a press release. “At Ball State, our mission is to provide our students with innovative opportunities to learn and to make connections with their peers and within the community.”

Targeting degraders

Eli Lilly on Wednesday announced a $35 million partnership with San Francisco-based Lycia Therapeutics, MedCityNews reported this week.

The partnership covers the development of up to five drugs using targeted protein degradation. Lycia, which developed technology to address problem proteins outside of a cell, will provide the technology, with Lilly handling the costs of preclinical and clinical development.

Lycia could earn more than $1.6 billion based on the progress and sales of products created through the partnership.

Purdue involved

Purdue University is playing a leadership role in the new $15 million Great Lakes Innovation Corps Hub.

Eleven universities, including Michigan and Toledo, are involved in the hub established by the National Science Foundation. It is an effort to create a “regional innovation ecosystem” and advance research in order to bring products to the market.

“A critical part of research at Purdue is the translation of discoveries and advances that have the potential for significant impact on society,” said Theresa Mayer, executive vice president for research and partnerships at Purdue, in a press release. “Purdue is thrilled to continue to be part of the NSF I-Corps program and to join with universities throughout the Great Lakes region in support of our collective mission …”

Tyson growing

Tyson Foods announced Saturday that it is investing $300 million in a new facility.

Tyson plans to construct a plant in Danville, Virginia, with production slated to begin in spring 2023. The 325,000-square-foot facility will produce full-cooked chicken products and is expected to create nearly 400 jobs.

“As consumers actively look to add more protein to their diets, Tyson is uniquely positioned as a category leader to meet that growing demand,” said Tyson president of prepared foods Noelle O’Mara in a press release. “Our continued focus on consumer driven innovation will accelerate this momentum and our investment in Danville-Pittsylvania County will help drive the long-term growth of the iconic Tyson brand.”

NextEra purchases

NextEra Energy Partners said Wednesday it has finalized the purchase of several wind farm facilities totaling 391 megawatts.

According to Renewables Now, NextEra bought Alta Wind VIII, Windstar and Coram in California and Granite in New Hampshire. All four are already in operation.

NextEra owns and operates Bluff Point Wind Energy Center in Jay and Blackford counties.

“The approximately 400 MW of long-term contracted wind projects with high-credit-quality customers are well-situated in markets with expected long-term renewables demand, which provides incremental optionality to NextEra Energy Partners with this investment in the future,” said NextEra chairman and CEO Jim Robo in a press release.
