Hosting tailgate

United Way of Jay County and Second Harvest Food Bank will host a free food tailgate from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Jay County Fairgrounds. Income verification is not required.



Flipped car

A Geneva woman flipped her vehicle while trying to avoid a collision about 4:05 p.m. Friday.

Terri L. Height, 43, Geneva, was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado south on U.S. 27 near county road 200 North. She swerved to avoid hitting vehicles that had stopped in the road because of a horse and buggy, according to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office report. Her Silverado flipped onto its top, causing between $2,500 and $5,000 in damage estimated.

No injuries were reported. Height’s vehicle was towed.



Turning crash

An Ohio woman failed to notice a vehicle turning in front, leading to a collision about 10 p.m. Friday.

Jessica M. Barga, 24, Rossburg, Ohio, was driving south on Indiana 67. She told Jay County Sheriff’s Office she didn’t notice the 2006 Chevrolet C/K 2500, driven by 59-year-old Wesley S. Harris of Pennville, in front of her beginning to turn east onto county road 125 South. She attempted to avoid a collision, but her 2014 Ford Explorer struck the truck.

Damage is estimated between $5,000 and $10,000. Barga’s vehicle was towed.



Deer hit

Damage is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500 after an animal ran in front of oncoming traffic on county road 200 South about 5:30 a.m. Monday.

Broden A. Auker, 19, Portland, was driving east on the road, just east of county road 100 East, when a deer ran in front of his 1997 GMC Sierra. Auker’s vehicle struck with the deer, causing damage to the passenger side headlight.



Rear collision

Damage is estimated between $10,000 and $25,000 after a Pennville woman’s vehicle struck the back of a Portland woman’s vehicle on Indiana 1 about 9:55 a.m. Monday.

Sidney D. Pitman, 23, was driving a 2017 Dodge Ram south on the highway behind a 2017 Subaru Forester. The driver of the Subaru, 42-year-old Davene R. Steen, slammed on her brakes to avoid hitting a cat in the road, according to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office report. Pitman wasn’t able to stop in time and crashed her Dodge into the back of the vehicle.

A passenger in Steen’s vehicle, 25-year-old Rebecca L. Mills of Portland, was transported to IU Health Jay for an evaluation for pain in her abdomen, according to the report.

The vehicle Pitman was driving is registered to Easement Equipment of Albany. It was towed.
