Failed to stop

Two people were taken to the hospital and damage was estimated between $50,000 and $100,000 after a Decatur man failed to stop at the intersection of Main and Hendricks streets in Bryant about 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Gavin M. Brower, 20, was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Express west on Main Street when he noticed a stop sign too late at the intersection with Hendricks Street (U.S. 27). He later told Jay County Sheriff’s Office the sign was obstructed by a tree and he couldn’t brake in time, instead continuing across Hendricks Street, where his Chevrolet and a southbound 2010 Chrysler Town & Country, driven by 47-year-old April L. Birchfield of Decatur, collided.

Brower’s car then hit a parked 1993 Chevrolet Conventional, registered to Davis F. Deon, and a building at 101 S. Hendricks St. Both Brower’s and Birchfield’s vehicles were towed.

Birchfield also had a passenger, 28-year-old Kaylee D. Watkins of Decatur. (One of them was taken to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, and another was taken to Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur.)

Off the road

A Dunkirk man turning onto Indiana 26 failed to yield to traffic, causing an accident about 4:20 p.m. Thursday.

Joshua A. Fredericksen, 22, was driving north on Indiana 1. He began to turn west onto Indiana 26 as a southbound 2018 Dodge Challenger, driven by 47-year-old Amy J. Caldwell of Redkey, approached. Caldwell swerved to miss Fredericksen’s vehicle and drove into a ditch.

Her vehicle was towed, with damage estimated less than $1,000.
