The Manns have always supported Indiana University.

This fall, the family will sent its first to Bloomington.

Griffin Mann, who graduated from Jay County High School last month, will continue is education as a direct admit to Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business.

When he began considering schools, IU was at the top of his list. Having always been interested in business, Mann petitioned for direct admission into Kelley.

“I was really nervous when filing (the petition) out,” said Mann. “I knew that I had a decent résumé going in because of how involved I was, and I was able to achieve some academic success while at Jay County.”

Earning direct admission into Kelley is no easy task, as the business school has just a 37% acceptance rate. In order to be considered for direct admission as a freshman, a student must have a grade point average of at least 3.8 and either a 30 on the ACT or 1370 on the SAT.

Mann went through the application process, which began Aug. 1 of his senior year, hoping his 4.2 GPA and various activities — golf, swimming, student council, National Honor Society, the CrossRoads Financial Federal Credit Union Youth Advisory Board and Fellowship of Christian Athletes — would make him a strong candidate for Kelley. He was watching a girls race during a swim meet at Bluffton, waiting for his turn in the pool, when he received the acceptance email for direct admission into Kelley.

“I just jumped up,” he said. “I was thrilled. I was super excited.”

He immediately texted family members, who Mann said have been his biggest support system throughout school and the college application process.

“My family has been a big part in all of this,” he said. “They instilled a great work ethic into me and have guided me along the way to all of this. I’m just very blessed with the family and friends I have.”

The Portland resident, who currently works for his uncle as a machinist at Flamespray Machine and Fabrication, isn’t 100% sure what he wants to do after graduating from IU. But he has an interest in pursing law school. He said he would also enjoy combining business with his favorite sport by going into the golf industry.
