Amy Barrett has resigned from Jay County Council.
Barrett, who held the District 2 seat, resigned Friday after accepting a part-time position in the county recorder’s office. She started her new role Monday.
“I just regret that I had to resign, but I feel like it’s the right thing for me at this point in my life,” Barrett said. “This position is going to create more opportunities for me.”
Barrett started as a council member in July 2018 following Bob Vance’s resignation. She began five months earlier than expected; she defeated her opponent in the Republican primary and would have run unopposed in the November election.
Her term runs through the end of 2022.
Jay County Republicans will hold a caucus at 6 p.m. Aug. 4 in the Community Room at Jay County Public Library, 315 N. Ship St., Portland, to fill Barrett’s spot. Eligible voters are the precinct committee members of Knox, Penn, Jackson, Greene, Wayne 2 or designated vice committee members.
Those interested in running for the council position should file a declaration of candidacy with Jay County Republican party chairman Jenae Blasdel no later than 72 hours before the caucus.
