A state agency, a community college and a business are teaming up to offer tech training.

Indiana Department of Workforce Development and Ivy Tech announced this week that they will collaborate with Amazon Web Services on a statewide initiative to provide cloud computing education courses and certification for high school and community college students.

Amazon Web Services will provide schools with free professional development, technical training and certification exams for educators who will begin teaching cloud computing courses. The goal of the program is to certify at least 5,000 Hoosiers over the next two years.

“We are pleased to collaborate with AWS to bring this opportunity to Hoosiers across Indiana,” said Ivy Tech president Sue Ellspermann in a press release. “As the state’s community college our focus is on bringing the education needed to earn credentials that result in high-paying careers right into the communities we serve.”

Support local

Jay County Chamber of Commerce is holding its Shop Local Jay! campaign next week. Its “Jay County Spotlight” radio broadcast is scheduled for Thursday in conjunction with the campaign.

Shop Local Jay! is an effort to highlight local business, with the chamber providing “shop local” stickers and customers offered the chance to win chamber gift certificates. There will also be additional promotion of specials participating businesses will be offering.

The radio spotlight event will coincide with the effort, offering businesses the opportunity to highlight themselves on a live broadcast from the chamber officer.

President retiring

Muncie-Delaware County Chamber of Commerce announced this week that Jay Julian will retire as president and CEO of the organization and as chief economic development officer of the Muncie-Delaware County Economic Development Alliance.

His retirement date is slated for April 1, 2022

“If you look at where we were in 2009 when Jay took on this role and where we are today, the advancements are clear,” said Terry Pence, chair of the chamber board, in a press release. “That is the truest mark of the impact Jay has made. As a business community we are stronger and better positioned for tomorrow than we were when he took on this role.”

The board has formed an eight-member search committee to find Julian’s replacement.

TCC to donate

Round Room announced its The Cellular Connection stores will be donating backpacks of school supplies as part of its School Rocks Backpack Giveaway.

The stores, including the Portland location at 922 N. Meridian St., will distribute the backpacks from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. They will include pencils, paper, a pencil box, a ruler, folders and glue.

“The start of the school year is an exciting time, and we are thrilled to support the education of the youth in our communities through our School Rocks Backpack Giveaway,” said Scott Moorehead, CEO of Round Room, in a press release. “By providing families across the country with essential school supplies, we’re easing the back-to-school shopping burden and helping set children up for success.”

Prices hit high

Purdue University’s Farmland value and Cash Rents Survey suggests that farm prices in Indiana climbed to an all-time high in June.

According to a press release from Purdue, “top quality farmland” averaged $9,785 per acre, up 14.1% from the same time last year. Prices also increased for average ($8,144) and low quality ($6,441) farmland. Prices surpassed previous records set in 2014.

“A unique combination of economic forces, including net farm income, expected income growth, crop and livestock prices, interest rates, exports, inflation, alternative investments, U.S. policy, and farmers’ liquidity, all played a major factor in the price increase we’re experiencing,” said Purdue associate professor Todd H. Kuethe, who authored the survey.

Wynnchurch purchases

Wynnchurch Capital announced Wednesday that it has acquired Trimlite Manufacturing.

Wynnchurch, which owns Portland Forge, added Trimlite to a portfolio that also includes Northern Wholesale Supply, The Wheel Group and Drew Foam Companies. The Washington-based business is a manufacturer and distributor of residential doors and related door products.

“Since its founding, Trimlite’s commitment to customer service has allowed the company to successfully broaden its product offering and expand into new geographies,” said Brian Crumbaugh, partner at Wynnchurch, in a press release. “We are excited to partner with Patrick and the entire Trimlite management team to continue growing the business.”

Lilly hunting

Eli Lilly has reached an agreement with Kumquat Biosciences to find new immuno-oncology drugs.

According to MedCityNews, Lilly is paying Kumquat $70 million in cash and an equity investment to start a drug discovery and development partnership. Kumquat, which is based in San Diego, could earn up to $2 billion for drugs resulting from the agreement reaching the market.

“Using small molecule inhibitors to target specific tumor antigens in complex with the immune machinery presents a unique opportunity to stimulate an enhanced tumor-specific immune response,” said CEO of Lilly’s Loxo Oncology unit Jacob Van Naarden in a press release. “We look forward to working with the accomplished Kumquat team to identify candidate medicines that interact with this target class.”

Walgreens opening

Walgreens Boots Alliance and VillageMD announced plans last week to open a series of new Village Medical at Walgreens practices in northern Indiana.

The companies are planning locations in South Bend, Merrillville, Griffith and Portage this year. They have a goal of opening at least 600 facilities in the U.S. over the course of the next four years as part of a $1 billion investment announced in January.

“According to the CDC, six in ten Americans live with at least one chronic condition, with many needing multiple daily medications, emphasizing that the coordinated care model of Village Medical at Walgreens is now more important than ever,” said Walgreens vice president of healthcare services Jamie Vortherms in a press release.
