Dunkirk’s glass manufacturing facility has earned another honor.

Ardagh Group, Glass – North America, this week announced that three of its facilities, including the glass manufacturing plant in Dunkirk, were awarded ENERGY STAR plant certifications.

The Environmental Protection Agency recognizes top-performing plants with ENERGY STAR recognition. Manufacturing plants must achieve EPA benchmarks in order to receive the certifications.

Other Ardagh facilities earning ENERGY STAR plant certifications are in Bridgeton, New Jersey, and Madera, California. The company’s Fairfield, California, distribution center earned an ENERGY STAR building certification.

Ardagh also announced Tuesday that 13 of its glass production facilities achieved ISO 14001:2015 certification.

Hosting breakfast

Swiss Village and Berne Rotary Club will celebrate National Older Americans Month with a free breakfast Friday.

The organizations will partner for their 30th Annual Senior Breakfast from 8 to 9 a.m. Friday. The event will be held in a drive-thru format this year in the front circle drive entrance at Swiss Village, 1350 W. Main St., Berne.

Vet retired

Veterinarian Made Smith has retired after more than 45 years serving at Smith Veterinary Hospital in Berne.

Smith’s retirement was effective Friday, The Berne Witness reported. She and her husband Larry, also a retired veterinarian, sold her practice to Dustin Hunt last year. Hunt, like the Smiths, is a graduate of Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine.

“It’s time for me to assist with the needs of family members,” Smith told The Witness. “The practice is in fabulous hands.”



Two retiring

Meridian Health Services announced recently that regional vice president Bob Coles and chief administrative officer Kirk Shafer are retiring.

Coles has served with Meridian since 2001 and has been involved in opening new clinics in Winchester, Richmond, Indianapolis, Mishawaka, Michigan City, Lafayette, Grant County and Fort Wayne. His last day as vice president will be July 9, after which he will continue with Meridian in a limited role.

Shafer became Meridian’s chief administrative officer in 2018 and has been a member of Meridian’s executive staff for 26 years. His final day with Meridian will be Oct. 1.



Scout establishes

Scout Clean Energy announced this week that it has established a $50 million letter of credit facility.

It will be used to “provide letters of credit to support both existing and upcoming security requirements associated with new project interconnections and power purchase agreements for Scout’s growing pipeline of renewable energy projects.” KeyBanc Capital Markets is the coordinating lead arranger for the credit facility, which can be upsized in the future to $85 million.

“This new credit facility will help accelerate Scout Clean Energy’s growth pipeline in wind, solar and battery storage diversified across 13 states,” said CEO Michael Rucker in a press release.



Leeward to purchase

Leeward Renewable Energy has entered into an agreement to purchase two renewable energy projects in Indiana, reNews reported this week.

Dallas-based Leeward, which has purchased easements from property owners in Richland and Knox townships in preparation for a solar project in Jay County, plans to purchase the Honey Creek solar project at the Hoosier Line wind project from Tri Global Energy. Both projects are located in White County and are expected to be operational as early as 2023.

“Hoosier Line Wind and Honey Creek Solar represent a significant milestone for TGE, our first expansion to Indiana,” said Tri Global Energy CEO John Billingsley told reNews. “We couldn’t be more excited to begin a new relationship with Leeward …”



McCabe confirmed

The U.S. Senate this week confirmed Janet McCabe, director of the Indiana University Environmental Resilience Institute and a professor of practice at the IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law at IUPUI, as deputy administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.

The Senate’s vote Tuesday made McCabe the No. 2 official in the EPA under administrator Michael S. Regan. She previously served as EPA acting assistant administrator of the Office of Air and Radiation from July 2013 to January 2017.

“I’m honored to be returning to the EPA as deputy administrator and grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of the Environmental Resilience Institute and to teach the next generation of environmental lawyers at Indiana University,” McCabe said in a press release.



DG donating

Dollar General this week announced plans to donate more than 100,000 new books to elementary schools in partnership with the Kellogg Company.

The donations are part of Dollar General celebrating its new store openings. With each new store, it will donate 100 new books to area elementary schools.

“Dollar General is proud to celebrate our new store openings by investing in the book collections of our local elementary school libraries,” said Dollar General vice president of corporate social responsibility and philanthropy Denine Torr in a press release. “Books are critical for expanding vocabularies, building critical thinking skills and nourishing children’s imagination and creativity.”



CVS launches

CVS Health on Thursday launched venture capital fund CVS Health Ventures.

The fund will initially launch with $100 million allocated for investments to focus on “technology-enabled innovation and disruption in digital health care.” Plans call for investing in early-stage companies that make health care more accessible, affordable and easier.

“Consumers deserve a better health experience, one that puts them at the center of cutting-edge, digitally enabled solutions,” said CVS Health president and CEO Karen S. Lynch in a press release. “Forming CVS Health Ventures will build on our successful track record of scaling innovation and driving change in health care.”
