Backing accident

Damage is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500 after a Pennsylvania man backed his vehicle out of a parking space in front of First Merchants Bank and into an eastbound vehicle on Main Street about 12:50 p.m. Friday.

Jose A. Marcias Torres, 50, Reading, Pennsylvania, told Portland Police he was backing a 2007 Cadillac Escalade out of the parking spot at 112 W Main St. near Meridian Street and didn’t see the 2017 Ford Edge, driven by 82-year-old John E. Robbins of Ridgeville, behind him going east on Main Street. The vehicle Torres was driving — it registered to Karen A. Rodriguez of Blackstone, Virginia — hit Robbins’ vehicle.

Deer hit

A Portland man’s vehicle struck a deer about 10:12 p.m. Thursday.

Dalton A. VanSkyock, 50, was driving south on Blaine Pike near Western Avenue when a deer began crossing the road. VanSkyock told Portland Police he attempted to miss the deer but struck it with the passenger side of his 2015 Ford Edge, causing between $5,000 and $10,000 in damage estimated.
