Intersection crash

Damage is estimated between $10,000 and $25,000 after a vehicle collision at the intersection of county roads 900 South and 400 East about 5:50 p.m. Friday.

Angelina L. Jennings, 17, Union City, was driving a 1999 Honda Civic north on county road 400 East and stopped at the intersection with county road 900 South. She began turning west onto county road 900 South when a westbound 2008 Chevrolet Equinox driven by 23-year-old Brandon Resler of Ridgeville hit the back of Jennings’ vehicle.

Jennings told Jay County Sheriff’s Office that Resler was speeding and crashed into her car. Resler told police Jennings pulled in front of him, and he tried to brake but wasn’t able to slow before the collision. (There is not a stop sign on county road 900 South, according to the report’s diagram.) Resler’s car was towed.



Rear collision

A Portland teen’s vehicle struck the car in front of her on Votaw Street about 3:50 p.m. Friday.

Patricia K. Anderson told Portland Police she was driving a 2011 Nissan Rogue south on Votaw Street near Industrial Drive and didn’t notice a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox, driven by 81-year-old Judith A. Guntle of Portland, stopped in front of her. She couldn’t brake in time before her vehicle collided with Guntle’s.

Damage is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.



Deer hit

Damage is estimated between $25,000 and $50,000 after a deer ran in front of traffic on county road 650 North about 8:47 p.m. Friday.

Courtney A. Goodwin, 24, Decatur, was driving a 2008 Pontiac G6 east on the road near county road 650 West. A deer ran in front of the vehicle she was driving, and she swerved to miss it and struck a utility pole.

The vehicle Goodwin was driving is registered to Kameron D. Hawkins of Berne. It was towed.



Struck from behind

Damage is estimated between $2,500 and $5,000 after a Portland teen’s vehicle crashed into the back of another Portland teen’s car on county road 200 West about 3:54 p.m. Friday.

William Strait, 17, was driving north on the road and approaching Indiana 26 when he tried to brake the 1998 Jeep Cherokee he was driving. The car then hit the back of a 1999 Chevrolet driven by 18-year-old Tyler Weesner.

The vehicle Strait was driving is registered to Sue Harrison of Portland.



Drove off road

A Bryant man was arrested for drunk driving after his vehicle left county road 250 North and struck a pole about midnight Saturday.

Justin T. Pennington told police he was driving his 2000 Chevrolet Blazer west on the road just west of county road 750 West when he noticed something in the roadway, according to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office report. He drove off the north side of the road into a ditch. His vehicle collided with a utility pole that broke and fell on top of the Chevrolet.

Pennington’s vehicle was towed, with damage estimated between $10,000 and $25,000. He was preliminarily charged with a Class C misdemeanor for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.



Turning accident

A Portland man turned onto Industrial Park Drive in front of oncoming traffic, causing a crash about 7:21 p.m. Saturday.

Guy L. Fisher, 55, Portland, was leaving the parking lot at 950 W. Votaw St. and turned south onto Industrial Park Drive. Fisher’s 1998 Dodge Ram Pickup turned in front of a northbound 2021 Harley Davidson driven by 51-year-old Luke A. Sutton of Berne, causing a collision.

Sutton’s motorcycle was towed, with damage estimated between $10,000 and $25,000.



Failed brakes

A Decatur woman’s vehicle crashed into another at the intersection of Water Street and Western Avenue after her brakes failed about 12:05 p.m. Saturday.

Juanita L. Groce, 56, said she was attempting to stop her 2000 Chevrolet Malibu at the intersection when her brakes failed, according to a Portland Police Department report. Her vehicle continued through the intersection and hit a northbound 2005 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 75-year-old Phillip J. Zimmerman of Redkey.

Damage is estimated between $2,500 and $5,000. Groce’s vehicle was towed.
