Deer accidents
Wild animals caused four accidents recently.
Susan M. Nichols, 57, Portland, was driving east on Indiana 26 just east of county road 500 East about 5:30 a.m. Friday when a deer ran in front of her 2016 Chevy Cruze. Nichols swerved off the north side of the road and into a ditch. Her vehicle continued east into Rory Campbell’s yard at 5802 E. Indiana 26, Portland, leaving tire marks in the ground. Damage is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Corina Treon, 30, Portland, was driving her 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan east on Indiana 26 near county road 1100 West about 6:50 p.m. Thursday when four deer ran in front of her vehicle. Treon’s Dodge two of the deer, according to a Jay County Sheriff’s Department report. Her vehicle was towed, with damage estimated between $10,000 and $25,000.
Cody M. Fiely, 29, Fort Recovery, Ohio, was driving west on Division Road near county road 200 East about 7:50 a.m. Thursday when a deer ran in front of his 2013 Buick LaCrosse. Fiely wasn’t able to avoid hitting the deer, causing between $2,500 and $5,000 in damage.
Joseph J. Markwell, 43, Dunkirk, was driving south on U.S. 27 near county road 400 North about 7:40 a.m. Friday when a deer jumped in front of his 2017 Chevrolet Cruze. Markwell wasn’t able to avoid the collision, causing between $2,500 and $5,000 in damage. His vehicle was towed.
Left the road
Damage between $2,500 and $5,000 after an Ohio man’s vehicle left the road near the Indiana-Ohio state line about 11:10 a.m. Thursday.
Keith D. Powell, 64, St. Henry, was driving west on Indiana 67 near State Line Road. As he crossed the state line into Indiana, his blood sugar dropped to a dangerously low level, according to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office report. Powell’s 2010 Dodge Caravan left the north side of the highway and went in a circle, crossing to the south side of the highway and then back again before coming to a stop in a ditch on the north side of the highway.
His vehicle was towed.
