Passing crash

A Portland man sustained a head injury after a Pennville woman’s car passed his vehicle as he turned off Indiana 26 about 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

Shana M. Morgan, 45, and Brad G. Iliff, 43, were both driving east on Indiana 26. Iliff told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was following a combine and turned on his turn signal in order to turn north on county road 700 East. Morgan told police she was in her 1997 Buick Regal behind Iliff’s 2020 Buick Enclave and didn’t notice him turn on his turn signal. Morgan began to pass Iliff and the combine as he began to turn, causing a collision.

Iliff was taken to the hospital for a head injury. Morgan had no injuries, according to a sheriff’s office accident report. Damage is estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.



Lost control

Damage is estimated between $50,000 and $100,000 after the semi an Ohio man was driving rolled off the side of Indiana 1 about 12 p.m. Saturday.

Raquan J. Jones, 24, Columbus, was driving a 2021 Kenworth T2000 north on Indiana 1 near county road 650 North when the trailer he was transporting began to trail off the highway. Jones told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he tried to keep the vehicle on the road but wasn’t able to do so. The semi left the road and rolled onto its side.

The Kenworth Jones was driving is registered to Werner Enterprise of Omaha, Nebraska, and it was towed.



Mirror broken

A Portland man found his sideview mirror broken about 3:43 p.m. Friday.

Andy L. Partin told Portland Police he parked his 2011 Lincoln MKZ on Main Street near Alexander Street about 11 a.m. Thursday. When he returned Friday afternoon, he noticed his drivers side mirror was broken. Partin told police the mirror was not broken before he parked his vehicle.

Damage is estimated less than $1,000.



Deer hit

Wild animals caused six accidents recently.

Mindy S. Eason, 54, Portland, was driving her 2020 Buick Encore east on county road 400 South near county road 100 West about 6:20 p.m. Wednesday when she struck a deer in the road. The animal was found in a northern ditch. Damage is estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.

Andrew C. Koons, 45, Portland, was driving a 2005 Dodge Ram Pickup south on U.S. 27 near county road 500 North about 11:44 p.m. Thursday when a deer ran in front of his vehicle, causing a collision. Damage is estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.

Lynn R. Boolman, 56, Portland, was driving north on Indiana 67 near Indiana 26 about 8:20 p.m. Friday when she struck a deer with her 2016 Buick Enclave. Damage is estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.

Pamela S. Caudill, 62, Muncie, was driving a 2019 Hyundai Elantra south on Indiana 67 near Indiana 26 about 8:25 p.m. Friday when the vehicle she was driving hit a deer in the road. Damage is estimated between $5,000 and $10,000. The vehicle Caudill was driving, which is registered to Donlen Trust of Bannockburn, Illinois, was towed.

Sondra J. Jordan, 47, Portland, was driving south on county road 500 East near county road 300 South about 4:25 a.m. Saturday when a deer ran across the road, causing Jordan’s vehicle to hit it. Damage is estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.

Robert A. Kriegbaum, 48, Portland, was driving a 2018 Chevrolet Cruze east on Indiana 18 near Indiana 1 about 8:30 p.m. Sunday when he drove into a deer on the road. Damage is estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.



Drunk driving

A Portland man was charged with a misdemeanor for driving a motorcycle while intoxicated, causing him to crash in a ditch along county road 300 North on Thursday.

Jay County Sheriff’s Department received a call in reference to a motorcycle accident on the road near county road 750 West about 10:20 p.m. The caller said she observed a motorcycle in the ditch with a man lying next to it.

Chad D. Carpenter, 42, was found sitting in the field just south of the road, about 200 feet from his 1997 Harley Davidson. He stated he did not know what happened.

Carpenter said he was not injured but was transported to IU Health Jay for a shoulder/upper arm injury and further evaluation. He was given a blood alcohol test with results pending, and he was released to the custody of the hospital for further treatment. His motorcycle was towed, with damage estimated between $10,000 and $25,000.
