Capsule Reports

Cornfield crash

Damage is estimated between $10,000 and $25,000 after a Marion woman’s car veered into a cornfield about 8:25 p.m. Tuesday.

Shaina L. Gunter, 34, was driving east on Indiana 26 near the intersection with Indiana 67 when the 2002 Chevrolet Malibu she was driving left the south side of the road for an unknown reason and entered a cornfield, according to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office report. Gunter and her passenger, 40-year-old Jeremy L. Best of Dunkirk, left the scene of the accident but were later found about 100 yards west along Indiana 26.

Gunter told police she lost control of the vehicle because of a tire exploding, but all four tires were still inflated upon inspection, according to the report.

Best was arrested and preliminarily charged with possession of a controlled substance, a Class A misdemeanor. He was released on a $1,000 bond from Jay County Jail.

Bicycle collision

A Redkey man turning onto Meridian Street from the True Value parking lot in Portland collided with a Portland cyclist about 4:25 p.m. Wednesday.

Jeff E. Taylor, 56, Redkey, was turning his 1996 Dodge Ram Pickup south onto Meridian Street from 1100 N. Meridian St. While turning, a bicycle operated by 59-year-old Richard J. Brewster of Portland struck his vehicle, according to a Portland Police Department report.

There was no damage to the vehicle or bicycle.

Asleep at wheel

Damage is estimated between $5,000 and $10,000 after a Dunkirk man fell asleep while driving on county road 200 South about 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Zachary W. Zigler, 34, Dunkirk, was driving east on the road near county road 400 West when he fell asleep at the wheel, according to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office report. Zigler’s vehicle crossed the center line and went north off the road, striking a mailbox –– it is owned by John Mikulski of Portland –– and trashcan with his 2012 Chevrolet Cruze.

Zigler's vehicle was towed.

Deer hit

Animals caused two accidents this week.

Justin W. Myers, 30, Portland, was driving his 2013 Chevrolet Silverado west on Indiana 18 near county road 125 West about 11:48 p.m. Wednesday when a deer ran into the path of his vehicle. Myers wasn’t able to avoid the collision, and his vehicle was towed.

Courtney R. Snell, 45, Portland, was driving a 2015 Toyota 4Runner north on Boundary Pike just south of county road 200 South about 12:10 p.m. Thursday when a deer ran in front of her vehicle. Snell wasn’t able to avoid hitting the animal.

Damage resulting from each accident is estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.
