Arbor Day event scheduled

A celebration of Arbor Day is scheduled for next weekend.

Minnetrista will hold its annual celebration of the day that encourages the planting of trees from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 29.

The Muncie cultural center will celebrate its 25th anniversary of being part of Tree City USA by giving away saplings on a first-come, first-served basis. Trees available will include black oak, white oak, chinkapin oak, red oak, Norway spruce, shell bark hickory, tulip, American beech, redbud, white flowering dogwood and sourwood.

There will also be activities and crafts for attendees of all ages at the event, which is being led by Muncie Urban Forestry and the City of Muncie.

Nominate artists

Indiana Arts Commission recently announced three opportunities in relation to the Governor’s Arts Awards.

The award program established by the commission and governor’s office recognizes individuals, communities and organizations who have made significant contributions to arts and creativity in Indiana. Celebrated every other year, the Governor’s Arts Awards winners receive an original piece of artwork created specifically for the program by an Indiana artist and the opportunity to share their story with other arts supporters statewide via a video.

Nominations are open to organizations or individuals who work or reside in Indiana or have significant ties to the state through some years of residency. No posthumous nominees will be considered. Nominations are open through the end of the day May 4.
