To the editor:

This letter to the editor is in response to a column in the April 5, 2023, edition of The Commercial Review. The column was written by Jane Henegar concerning the LGBTQ bill being offered to protect parents’ rights here in Indiana.

I want to address two lines in the article: the first is that “parents of LGBTQ kids are having their rights stripped away.”

How does a bill to support parents in any way hurt these parents?

The other line said, “Let’s cut through the conspiracy theories … that transgender youth receive in Indiana. It isn’t catching.”

I believe parents do have the right to know what their children are being taught in schools. Especially when it comes with teaching that involves such a life-changing event as transforming a male to a female or vice versa. Parents should never be kept in the dark on such a life changing event. No child should ever be told it is OK to change their gender. In this world, all humans are born either male or female and so are all mammals. Children should be taught to be what their loving Creator made them to be as they are being formed in their mother’s womb. All children need to learn and be taught how to accept themselves in order to grow and live in the body they were born with.

Every individual — each one of us — is unique. We have different body shapes, mental abilities and gifts, and all of our life we want to fit into society. We all will have hard times and good times and the way for a child to survive is to show them love and give them the skills to push forward and learn what their loving Creator has for them, not to become something they were never meant to be. Children need both parents and teachers helping them accept who they are, point out their strengths and discipline their faults so they can grow into strong adults.

I have not read the bill that is being addressed here but I do know that these thoughts are being put into children’s minds. I know of a 10-year-old girl thinking she wants to be a boy and another 10-year-old girl that is trying to convince her that she shouldn’t be thinking that way. This girl said she knows a man that changed to a girl. It blows my mind that these thoughts are in kids’ thoughts. What are they being taught?

Just look around at creation and know — we have a loving Creator that cares for us — just see all the beauty He created in nature. Also look at all the diverse animals and see that they are happy and content when they are cared for correctly — shouldn’t we do the same for our children?
