A former Patriot trailed only one swimmer at her conference championships.

Over the course of the season, only 10 in the entirety of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics have been faster.

Vivienne Kunkler, a 2019 Jay County High School graduate, finished as the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference runner-up in the 200-yard breaststroke last weekend and posted an NAIA provisional time competing for the Bethel College women’s swim team.

Kunkler’s best swim for the Pilots, who finished No. 2 in the conference behind Olivet Nazarene, came in the 200 breaststroke as she finished second behind Julietta Vega of the champion Tigers. Her time of 2 minutes, 24.88 seconds, is the 11th-fastest in the NAIA this season and puts her in position to compete at the NAIA National Championships beginning March 1 in Columbus, Georgia.

She is a three-time NAIA All-American.

Kunkler also finished fifth in the KCAC meet in the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.54 — that time is 13th fastest in the NAIA this season — and 20th in the 50 freestyle.

She was part of third-place relay finishes for Bethel in the 200 medley, 400 medley and 200 freestyle.
