Strangulation

An Anderson man was sentenced to jail for strangulation.

Antoine R. Whitfield, 29, 1718 Reverend J.T. Menifee St., Anderson, pleaded guilty in Jay Superior Court to strangulation, a Level 6 felony. He was sentenced to one year in Jay County Jail and given six days credit for time served. Whitfield was fined $25 and assessed $185 in court costs.



Drug possession

Several people were sentenced to serve time recently after pleading guilty in Jay courts to drug possession.

Jeffery A. Beam, 50, 815 Washington Ave., Greenville, Ohio, pleaded guilty in Jay Superior Court to possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony. He was sentenced to one year in Jay County Jail with all but 60 days suspended and given 60 days credit for time served. Beam was fined $25, assessed $185 in court costs and ordered to pay a $200 drug abuse, prosecution, interdiction and correction fee. He was placed on probation for 305 days and ordered to submit to an evaluation within 30 days of his sentencing for substance abuse counseling. As part of his plea agreement, a Class C misdemeanor for possession of paraphernalia was dismissed.

Jimmy R. Tapley, 38, 506 E. Main St., Portland, pleaded guilty in Jay Superior Court to possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony. He was sentenced to one year in Jay County Jail with all but 120 days suspended and given four days credit for time served. Tapley was fined $25, assessed $185 in court costs and ordered to pay a $200 drug abuse, prosecution, interdiction and correction fee. Tapley will be placed on probation for 245 days after he finishes his sentence, with 116 days of his probation to be spent on house arrest. As part of his plea agreement, a Level 6 felony for possession of a narcotic drug was dismissed.

Patricia J. Martin, 53, pleaded guilty in Jay Circuit Court to possession of methamphetamine, a Level 4 felony. She was sentenced to eight years in Indiana Department of Correction and given credit for time served. Martin was assessed $185 in court costs and ordered to pay a $200 drug abuse, prosecution, interdiction and correction fee. She was recommended for purposeful incarceration, meaning upon completion of a substance abuse treatment program, the court would consider modifying her sentence.



Pointing firearm

A Portland man was sentenced to jail after pleading guilty to pointing a firearm at another person.

Caleb S. Grigsby, 21, 820 W. Arch St., pleaded guilty in Jay Superior Court to the Level 6 felony. He was sentenced to one year in Jay County Jail with all but 60 days suspended and given two days credit for time served. Grigsby was placed on house arrest, fined $25, assessed $185 in court costs and placed on probation for 305 days.



Burglary

A woman was sentenced to prison after pleading guilty in Jay Circuit Court to burglary.

Peggy E. Manis, 45, pleaded guilty to the Level 5 felony. She was sentenced to 42 months in Indiana Department of Correction and given credit for time served. Manis was assessed $185 in court costs and ordered to pay $3,500 in restitution to the benefit of Neil and Margaret Habegger.
