FARMLAND — A Farmland firefighter died this morning when a firetruck flipped while responding to a call.
Kyle T. Osgood, Farmland Volunteer Fire Department assistant chief, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident this morning.
“This one is going to take a while,” said Farmland firefighter Jeff Willen this morning.
Another firefighter, Zachary Lee, 19, suffered serious injuries and was transported via helicopter for treatment.
Indiana Department of Homeland Security confirmed details about the incident in a press release just after noon today.
Osgood and Lee were responding to a call regarding a barn fire when the tanker truck they were in rolled over on a curve on county road 1000 West about a quarter mile north of county road 400 North. They were both thrown from the truck, which came to a stop on top of them, according to the press release. (They were the only firefighters on the truck at the time of the accident.)
Osgood, whose grandfather had previously served as the department’s chief, was pronounced dead at the scene about 6:30 a.m., the release says.
Lee sustained serious injuries to his legs. He was flown to a Fort Wayne hospital in critical condition.
Randolph County Sheriff Art Moystner turned over the investigation of the incident to Indiana State Police.
“We are such a close-knit community that I didn’t want anyone who knew (the firefighters and family) to be involved with the investigation,” the sheriff said.
Indiana State Fire Marshal Steve Jones responded to the scene to assist firefighters and their families.
