PD dismissed from lawsuit
Special Judge Douglas K. Mawhorr dismissed the Portland Police Department from a lawsuit filed by clerk-treasurer Lori Phillips, though claims against the city, Police Chief Dustin Mock and investigator Jeff Hopkins remain active.
A Trusty sign
After the former home of Trusty Woods in downtown Fort Recovery appeared on the market, Mariachis Mexican Restaurant co-owner Jaime Cervantes said he received several calls assuming he had bought the property. He took it as a sign.

Unemployment drops to 3.7%
Jay County had an unemployment rate of 3.7% last month, according to estimates the Indiana Department of Workforce Development released this week.

County slices facility budget
Jay County Council slashed the living facility’s budget for next year in half on Wednesday following a first reading of the 2026 budget.

Dunkirk 2026 budget approved
Dunkirk City Council approved the city’s $2.64 million budget for next year during its meeting Monday.
Expansion is complete
Joyce/Dayton Corporation celebrated the completion of its nearly $9 million expansion project — its 11th in 30 years in Portland — with a ribbon cutting, tours and lunch on Thursday.
County OKs radio lease
Jay County Commissioners approved a resolution Monday agreeing to a $4.64 million lease with Motorola for new radio equipment.
Opportunity to connect
That’s the concept behind the first community dinner on the bridge in Jay County. It’s slated for 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday on the green bridge that connects Hudson Family Park and Weiler-Wilson Park in Portland.
No new residents for county facility
Jay County Commissioners decided not to allow new residents during a meeting Monday. They also discussed establishing pay incentives for employees to continue working for the county until the facility closes and heard about a potential path forward with The Journey Home of Winchester.
