Council allots $$ for firetruck
REDKEY — The fire department has been granted funds to purchase a new firetruck. Redkey Town Council agreed Tuesday to allot $75,000 from the cumulative capital improvement fund to go toward buying a pumper truck.
Recorder resigns
Jay County Recorder Melanie Upp is resigning. Upp recently alerted officials to her plans to leave office, with her last day set for Dec. 31. Her term isn’t set to expire until the end of 2026.
Properties transferred to DIDC
County officials are working on development opportunities in Dunkirk. Jay County Commissioners agreed Monday to transfer 19 properties to Dunkirk Industrial Development Corporation.
Applying for grant
Dunkirk Mayor Jack Robbins told the city council during its brief meeting Monday that plans are to apply for grant funding to help pay for paving seven streets in 2026.
‘Hope’ seeks $ for Roku show
A local addiction recovery support group has made it onto the screen. It may receive funding from the county to help further the effort.
Plans for The Venue fall through
Portland Redevelopment Commission learned Friday that Dave Smuts, one of the music promoters involved in the project, indicated that his group will not pursue development of The Venue at 105 W. Main St. and that they are open to selling the building.
Redkey Town Council gets primer on budget
Redkey Town Council members learned more about budgets during a two-hour meeting Thursday. Redkey’s budget adoption is set for Tuesday’s meeting.
Emergency planning
Portland firefighter Zach Hudson presented information to the city’s aviation board Wednesday regarding work toward creating a plan and providing training to familiarize emergency responders with the airport.
Plan approved
Starting in the 2026 primary, Jay County will use two vote center locations for Election Day — Jay Community Center in Portland and West Jay Community Center in Dunkirk. Voters may cast their ballots at either location.

Jay County Commissioners reviewed a draft ordinance Tuesday that would regulate controlled fires.
Jury trial set
On Tuesday, Special Judge Douglass K. Mawhorr scheduled a two-day jury trial for Portland clerk-treasurer Lori Phillips’ lawsuit against the City of Portland, Police Chief Dustin Mock and investigator Jeff Hopkins was scheduled for Nov. 2 and 3, 2026.
County approves severance offer for workers
Jay County Country Living needs its employees to stay until the facility closes. Jay County Commissioners have agreed to compensate them for sticking around and to provide an incentive to close sooner.
Grant application delayed
Mayor Jack Robbins updated Dunkirk City Council on the status of the Green Building, noting Monday that despite efforts it is not possible for the city to make this month’s application deadline for state funding.
District seeking Safe Streets feedback
Funding is available to make travel safer. East Central Indiana Regional Planning District is seeking feedback on what areas need the most attention.
