Smith canceled
Nate Smith’s management team informed the Jay County Fair Board on Monday afternoon that the country music artist has canceled his scheduled Friday concert at the Jay County Fair.
Green thumb in the garden
Seventh grader Kyler Morehous loves homegrown vegetables. That’s why he started maintaining his family’s gardens and selling his harvests at Portland Local’s Market. Some of his produce is also on display at the Jay County Fair. Kyler, 12, started helping his parents in their garden at a young age.
Board: County should close facility
Jay County Country Living Advisory Board at its June meeting recommended the county close its living facility. Jay County Commissioners discussed potential next steps, such as transitioning ownership to another entity, at their meeting Monday before tabling the matter.
Grand new view
A new grandstand judge’s tower, completed less than two weeks before the start of the Jay County Fair, is the latest addition to Jay County Fairgrounds and will debut at tonight’s demolition derby that kicks off eight days of events in front of the grandstand.
All fired up
The Jay County Fair kicks off this weekend — a week earlier than in recent years — and will continue through next weekend, including the Independence Day holiday.
Rate goes up to 3.3%
Indiana Department of Workforce Development estimates released this week show Jay County flipped in the unemployment rankings in May, tying for the 39th-highest rate among the state’s 92 counties after tying for 24th-lowest in April.
Council reviews employee issues
Personnel topics flooded Redkey Town Council’s meeting Tuesday. The council tabled decision on firing a town employee and discussed switching titles between the town’s police officers. It also introduced its newest council member, Byron Daugherty, during a more than two-hour meeting.
Department budget OK’d for 2026
Jay/Portland Building and Planning’s budget for next year is ready. The department’s inter-local joint board approved its 2026 budget and lease agreement Monday.
Dunkirk plans to increase rates, wages
Dunkirk City Council gave initial approval to 3% increases to water and sewer rates and 2% raises for employees at its meeting Monday.
