FR struggles in opener

FRHS boys basketball

ST. MARYS, Ohio — The Indians knew filling in for the third-leading scorer in school history wouldn’t be easy.
Points were hard to come by Friday for the Tribe. And the defense couldn’t do much to slow the Roughriders either.
The Fort Recovery High School boys basketball team opened its season with a 74-47 loss to host Memorial in which it was out-shot by 27 percentage points.
The Indians (0-1), who lost Elijah Kahlig and his 1,393 career points to graduation, struggled to 32 percent shooting in the second half to finish at 36 percent of the game. Kyle Schroer led the team with 10 points, and Caleb Martin added eight.
Darien Sheffer had seven rebounds and a pair of assists.
The Roughriders (1-0) took control from the start, running out to a five-point lead at the end of the opening period. They racked up 24 second-quarter points while shooting 67 percent from the field in the first half for a 38-24 advantage.
Four players reached double figures for Memorial, with Quinn Zaerr scoring a game-high 14 points. Isaac Fitzgerald, Derek Jay and Jacob Grannon followed with 13, 12 and 11 points respectively as the Roughriders shot 63 percent for the game.
Zaerr and Fitzgerald each grabbed six rebounds to lead Memorial to a 22-19
