MUNCIE — Jay County High School’s wrestling team bounced back from a loss to Leo on Thursday with four straight wins Saturday in the Delta Duals.
The Patriots finished 4-1, defeating Fort Wayne Concordia (39-33), Triton (45-28), Fort Wayne Snider (42-23) and Fort Wayne North Side (60-15). Its only loss was a 43-25 defeat against Greensburg.
Andy Kohler (182-pound weight division), Tyler Leonhard (152) and Dallas Dudelston (132) all went 5-0 on the day for Jay County (4-2).
After losing his first match to Concordia’s Jacob Massucci 8-6, freshman Gaven Hare (195) went on to record four straight wins —the first four of his career — including two first-round pins.
Jeremy Jones of Triton scored an early two points against Hare on a takedown. With his back to the mat, Hare countered with a reversal to even the score at 2-2, and pinned Jones just 50 seconds into the match for his first varsity win.
Against Marcellis Simmons of Snider, Hare found himself with his back to the mat once again, and moments later he was trailing 4-0 after a two-point near fall. Hare escaped Simmons’ grasp to make the score 4-1. With both wrestlers on their feet, Hare put Simmons in a headlock, dropped him to the mat for a takedown and then pinned him 1 minute, 49 seconds, into the period.
“The first (victory against Jones), I just kind of caught him in the right position at the right time,” said Hare.
In his match against Simmons, Hare said he spent the early part of the match just feeling him out, getting an idea of what his strategy was.
“I realized he didn’t know much, so I figured I would try something different,” the freshman said.
Chris Pfeifer (HWT), Kaimen Sanders (113), Colton Compton (126) and Ivan Hemmelgarn (145) all finished the day 3-2.
Hemmelgarn needed overtime to get his victory against Snider’s Dalton Harrington. Leading 7-4 after two periods and starting the third in the down position, Harrington scored a reversal to extend the score to 9-4. Hemmelgarn answered with a reversal of his own, and then scored a three-point near fall to even the score at 9-9.
In the one minute of extra time, Hemmelgarn took Harrington to the mat for a takedown and the 11-9 victory.
