MARION — The only thing “Giant” about Wednesday night’s match was Jay County’s total score.
The Patriot wrestling team clobbered the host Marion Giants 60-18 to improve to 8-3 on the season. Eight of its 10 victories came by way of pins.
“That’s our key to success with so many young kids in the lineup,” said JCHS coach James Myers, who starts freshmen in the four lightest weight classes, but normally has eight seniors in the upper nine. “If we can get pins where we need them we’re going to dominate matches.
“In practice we’ve just been working cradle finishes, working bar finishes. At times we still didn’t execute perfectly, but we got the job done tonight.
“We pinned a lot of kids and looked pretty good doing it.”
After Robert Ralston scored a 7-3 win over Terrance Jones in the night’s opening match at 160 pounds, Jay County took four of the next five matches with pins to build a 27-6 advantage. It went on to win four of the final five matches on pins to build the 42-point margin.
Perhaps the best of those came from Micah Enyart.
The senior, wrestling at 145 pounds, didn’t post the fastest win of the night. That went to Andrew Lancaster, who followed him in the lineup.
Nor did he build a huge points lead before finishing the match. Kurtis Hess did that one match earlier.
Enyart was just thrilled to be back in the starting lineup.
He finally returned from a wrist injury suffered early in the season, taking the mat in the second-to-last match Wednesday night. He got a takedown early in the opening period for a 2-0 lead, then slammed Justin Bull to the mat in the second to score his victory in 2-minutes, 57 seconds.
“It feels pretty good to actually be back in the action after a long break,” said Enyart. “I’m still a little rusty, I have a lot of work to do, but it felt nice.”
Added Myers: “We’re glad to have Micah back. Having another senior ... we’re only going to be better out there.”
Lancaster wasted next to no time as he capped the Patriot victory with a quick pin at 152 pounds. The freshman got a quick takedown and pinned Adam Breedlove in 49 seconds.
Hess (140), ranked 19th in the state, worked over Vincent Scott with a takedown and release strategy in the first period and beginning of the second. He led 8-3 after two minutes, pushed his advantage to 13-5, then decided to finish it as he took Scott down and didn’t let him go to finish the match in 3:42.
“It just feels really cool having a lot of seniors on the team this year,” said Hess. “We’ve got a lot of good leadership. Our line-up is coming together really well.”
Hess, a state qualifier last season, has won 20 consecutive matches since dropping the season opener.
“Oh yeah, definitely,” he said when asked if that first defeat has served as motivation. “I kind of needed that loss. It was a good time to have it too, in the very first match.”
Other seniors scoring pins for the Patriots against Marion were Bill Spahr (171) and Jason Crouch (HWT).
Spahr, who is now 19-3, got his match taken care of just before the first-period buzzer with a pin of Steven Cotton in 1:56, and Crouch also finished his match in the first as he defeated Danny Smith in 1:25.
Juniors Tom Smith (189) and Tony McCowan (130) also earned pins, as did freshman Casey Kenney (103). Smith defeated DarVon Wright in 2:52, McCowan topped Evan Mazellan in 4:45 and Kenney downed Khiry Henderson in 3:10.
Caleb Culy (119) scored the other Jay County victory 5-4 over Zach Vetor.
The team scored the big win despite being without the services of seniors Nathan Daniels, Matt Daniels and Nathan Conatser.
“We had some young kids in the lineup tonight, some first-year wrestlers,” said Myers, noting he expects Conatser to wrestle tonight when the Patriots visit Delta at 6 p.m. “They were in matches and won some matches. They’re getting some confidence.
“We know how we stand against the other sectional teams. We’re going to keep improving and I think we’ll be on a run come sectional time. Hopefully we can get some guys going deep in the tournament.”
Marion managed just three victories on the night, one of which came from sixth-ranked Kyle Mazellan (215).
He ran his record to 26-0 by pinning Rodney Cassell in 3:48.[[In-content Ad]]
