FORTVILLE - Chalk it up as a learning experience.
The track season came to an end for the Jay County boys Thursday at the Mount Vernon regional as none of the Patriots managed the top-three finish needed to earn a state berth. Sophomore Brandon Reynard came closest, finishing sixth in the 300-meter hurdles to score the team's only three points.
Jay County tied for 22nd with Muncie Central out of 27 scoring teams. Ben Davis won the meet-ending 4x400 relay to finish at 91.5 points and held off Lawrence North (85.5) for the regional title.
"It's just our young team getting educated," said Patriot coach Greg Garringer. "I think a lot of the young guys ... you could tell they were kind of in awe of some of the teams. ... When they started seeing some of the kids performing - these are the guys that are going to be winning medals down at Bloomington in a week - it kind of opens your eyes a little bit."
At Wayne, the season concluded for the South Adams boys team as well as its only competitor - Nathan Rupp - finished 15th.
Reynard, one of four sophomores competing for Jay County at the meet, turned in the best effort. He ran more than three tenths of a second faster than he did in winning the Muncie Central sectional a week ago, placing sixth in the 300 hurdles at 40.17.
The sophomore was just eight hundredths of a second behind fifth-place Michael Roberts of Lawrence Central, and three tenths ahead of seventh-place Deonte Singfield from Lawrence North.
The third-place finisher, Matthew Anderson of Brebeuf, posted a time of 39.53.
"The only (personal record) that we got tonight was out of Reynard," said Garringer, noting that all of the five athletes who finished in front of Reynard are seniors. "He gave it his all. He was a little disappointed, but he put us on the scoreboard."
Reynard also placed 12th in the 100-meter dash at 11.91 seconds. No other Patriot finished higher than 13th.
Posting 13th-place finishes were Travis Theurer in the discus at 116 feet even, Andrew Lancaster in the shot put at 42 feet, 41/2 inches and Dexter Shreve in the high jump at 5 feet, 10 inches. Reynard, Hatzell, Lance Franklin and Ruben Vela were also 13th in the 4x100 relay with a time of 46.46.
Jay County got 14th-place efforts from Shreve (400 dash - 57.22) and Hatzell (200 dash - 24.49), and Lancaster tossed the discus 106 feet, 10 inches for 15th. Hatzell was 16th in the 100 dash at 12.25, and Reynard, Hatzell, Franklin and Mason Shreve finished in 3-minutes, 42.58 seconds for 16th.
South Adams' Rupp posted a time of 4:59.34 in the 1,600 run for 15th place at Wayne.[[In-content Ad]]
