Ainsworth leads Jay gymnasts at Valpo (01/14/08)

VALPARAISO - In a meet hosted by one of Indiana's elite, the Patriots brought their best.

The Jay County High School gymnastics team posted its best total of the season Saturday, finishing fifth with 96.025 points at the eight-team Valparaiso Invitational. It was nearly three points ahead of McCutcheon and just 0.625 behind sectional rival Huntington North.

The host Vikings, ranked fourth in the state, ran away with the meet with a school-record 114.15 points. New Castle was second at 102.9.

Kristen Ainsworth paced the Patriots, finishing sixth in the all-around with a career-best 33.4. The freshman also had career bests of 8.45 on the uneven bars for eighth place and 8.575 on the balance beam for ninth. She was 11th on the floor exercise and 19th on the vault.

Senior Erika Hunt was the only other Patriot in the top 10, finishing 10th on the floor at 8.475. She was 10th in the all-around as well, and 11th on the balance beam with a season-high 8.025.

Kendra Homan, a senior, paced JCHS on the vault with a 12th-place 8.35.

Stars 4-1 at Tri

STRAUGHN - Three South Adams athletes won titles Saturday as the Starfire wrestling team posted a 4-1 record at the Tri Invitational.

Gabe Sprunger (103), Josh Mann (130), who is ranked eighth in the state, and Jim West (HWT) each took the top spot in their weight class.

The Starfires earned victories over Indian Creek (51-9), the host Titans (45-27), Brebeuf (66-6) and Centerville (52-21). Their only loss of the day came to Hamilton Heights, 40-21, as they ran their record on the year to 21-4.

South Adams was also in action Friday night with a 42-26 victory over Southern Wells. Chase Sprunger, T.J. Burnfield and Nick Taylor each had pins to lead SAHS.

Perfect 7th wins

East Jay Middle School's seventh grade boys basketball team added two more victories to its undefeated resume Saturday in winning its invitational.

The Chiefs took the East Jay Invitational with victories over a pair of Decatur schools, 45-18 over St. Joe and 53-21 against Bellmont. The EJMS eighth graders also made the finals by knocking off St. Joe 37-21, but dropped the title to Bellmont 42-26.

Brock McFarland paced the East Jay seventh grade team, now 12-0, with 18 points against St. Joe and 15 versus Bellmont. Cade Price added 13 points in the title game, and Kegan Comer scored nine in the championship after hitting for 13 in the semi-final round.

Dillon Ainsworth nearly matched the entire St. Joe squad in the seventh grade opener, scoring 20 points. He added nine points in the championship game, and Austin Cowan and Andy Haffner finished the day with six points apiece.[[In-content Ad]]
