All conference awards given to JC, FR athletes (11/04/05)
Many area athletes were honored Thursday as Jay County held its fall awards ceremony and the Midwest Athletic Conference released its all-conference football teams.
The Patriots, who had four teams win titles in the Olympic Athletic Conference, had 23 athletes in seven sports earn all-conference honors. The Indians had eight football players honored in the MAC.
Leading the list of honorees were four Jay County coaches who were voted OAC Coach of the Year in their respective sports.
Those coaches, all of whom led conference championship teams were Les Bantz for girls cross country, Shane Hill for football, Alan Bailey for boys soccer and Barry Weaver in boys tennis.
Travis VanSkyock was the only member of the Fort Recovery football team to make the All-MAC first or second team. He was named to the second team offense at receiver as he finished with 34 receptions for 666 yards and three touchdowns.
The senior also earned honorable mention for his play on the defensive side of the ball.
Six Jay County players were named to the All-OAC football team, led by seniors Justin Gilbert, Bill Spahr, Joseph Vormohr and Cody Hutzler. Also earning the honor were Corey Comer and Casey Waters.
Aaron Poole, Scott Bruggeman, Luke McClung, Vladimir Bjelica and Trey Dunn were named to the all-conference boys soccer team. Earning All-OAC spots by finishing in the top five at the conference girls cross country meet were Alyssa Johnson, Amanda Johnson, Jessica Mosier and Kylie Wellman.
The Patriots boys tennis and girls soccer teams each had three players receive all-conference awards. They were Kurt Hess, Randy Evans and Tyler Rigby in boys tennis and Sara Garringer, Saffron Redwine and Abby Schmiesing in girls soccer.
Trisha Champ earned an all-conference medal by placing second in the OAC meet in girls golf, and Markie Runyon was named to the All-OAC team in volleyball.
Fort Recovery had seven players join VanSkyock on the list of MAC honorees. Earning All-MAC honorable mention were Steve Trobridge and Matt Tobe, each for offense and defense, and Tyler Rauh, Nick Hemmelgarn, Ryan Staugler, Tony Diller and Eric Weitzel.[[In-content Ad]]
