The college scout was on hand to watch Winchester's Sarah Hamm. But it was Lindsey Wellman, Pazia Speed and the Patriots who put on the show.

The Jay County High School girls basketball team's pair of juniors combined for 39 points, 22 rebounds and eight assists Saturday night in leading a 62-38 destruction of the visiting Class 2A No. 10 Golden Falcons.

"They've got a great team. They're well coached," said first-year Winchester coach Tom Osborn, whose team dropped to 2-1 after winning its first two games by a combined 52 points. "You're going to see a lot of great things out of that team. ...

"We're not going to see somebody like that until we get, if we are lucky enough to get out of our sectional, we'll see teams like that at (the Batesville regional). We've got a long time to get ready for that ... This was a big learning experience for our team."

A game that saw six lead changes in the first quarter and was tied at 23 in the second turned in the Patriots' favor in the final minutes of the opening half.

JCHS coach Kirk Comer called a time-out, telling his players the next few minutes could decide the game. The Patriots also switched their defensive strategy, going to their "mystery" defense to put more pressure on the Winchester ball handlers.

The result was a 12-1 run for Jay County, which included a pair of 3-pointers from senior guard Kaelee Keller. Speed also had a three-point play during the run, and Cara Garringer scored a fast-break hoop off of a Speed assist.

"We didn't do a very good job of handling their pressure with our guards," said Osborn. "We made too many predictable passes and they stole the ball and got a couple of quick fast-break points out of it. It just seemed to open the flood gates."

The run pushed the Patriots to a 35-26 halftime advantage, and they dominated the second half. Winchester managed just five points in each of the final two quarters - with just one coming from the 6-foot-3-inch Hamm and none by Morgan Peacock, who had nine on a trio of 3-pointers in the first half.

Wellman and Speed set the tone in the opening quarter for the Patriots, who have won their first four games by an average of nearly 30 points, leading them to an 11-3 advantage on the glass and scoring 14 points.

Both posted double-doubles, with Wellman totaling 21 points and 10 rebounds. Speed hit all of her first-half shots - five from the field and three from the foul line - and finished with 18 points and 12 boards. They each had four assists, and keyed Jay County's 36-23 rebounding advantage.

"Most of the time they were guarding Hamm inside," said Comer of Wellman and Speed. "They had the toughest job in there.

"It was just a great team effort again. We got a good effort from everybody who went in."

Keller joined the juniors in double figures with 10 points, and Garringer added seven.

While Hamm, who was being observed by a scout from Butler, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked five shots, she was limited to 2-of-7 shooting for six points. The Patriots doubled down throughout the game, either denying the pass to the post or forcing Hamm to kick the ball back to the outside.

"We were trying to take her, not out of the game, but trying to take her out of her routine," said Comer. "We tried to take them all out of their routine."

Comer also said Keller had come to him earlier in the day and indicated that she thought the Patriots should press Winchester, something that they had not done in their first three games. They did, and the tactic paid off.

"We ... had a hard game (Friday) night. I think in the second half our legs just weren't there anymore," said Osborn. "It's tough. I knew coming in having back to back games like that was going to be tough on us."

Steph Geeting paced Winchester with 12 points, and Peacock was next with her nine.

Jay County held the Golden Falcons to a field goal or less in three of the four quarters in its 33-12 victory.

Mariah Hornaday scored 12 points for the Patriots, out took a 6-2 lead after one quarter and outscored Winchester 8-3 in the second and 12-1 in the fourth. All but two of her points came in the final period.

Maria Murphy and Danielle Link each added five points.

Heather Hersberger's five points were a team high for the Golden Falcons. Kristen Baker scored four points.
