FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Site Fieldhouse was the wrong place for the Ansonia Tigers to come looking for their first victory.

Fort Recovery wasn’t perfect, but it had more than enough to keep Ansonia winless by a 25-13, 25-9, 25-16 final Monday.

The Tribe used a familiar pattern to dump the visiting Tigers. They had rough serving early, and Tiff Gaerke took over late.

“(Fort Recovery) brings a tough team every year,” said Ansonia coach Mindy Walters. “I knew they were going to be good, but we didn’t play anywhere up to our potential. We got off to a slow start in the first game. If it hadn’t been for Fort Recovery’s missed serves ... “

Despite a rash of serving miscues in the first, the Indians (7-3) dominated the opening pair of games. When Ansonia (0-13) threatened in the third, Gaerke took control.

The Tribe was having trouble finding consistency as the Tigers went on a 7-1 run. Jennalee Post knocked down a kill to stop the run, bringing Gaerke back into the front-row rotation with Fort Recovery trailing 10-8.

The disadvantage didn’t last long.

Gaerke, a sophomore middle hitter, wasted no time in slamming a kill past the Ansonia defense. She ignited an 8-0 run with Holly Stein behind the service line, and by the time Gaerke rotated out of the front row the Indians held a 19-13 lead.

She had three kills and a pair of stuff blocks during the 11-3 run. Post added a stuff block and an ace, Megan Wenning had two kills and Stein also recorded an ace.

Gaerke had nine more kills than anyone else on the court, finishing with 13. She also had a match-high 10 blocks.

“I thought (Gaerke) did a great job on the front row,” said Fort Recovery coach Jackie Briscoe. “We’ve really be concentrating on her blocking and her timing and just keeping the ball on their side of the court, and if it comes on our side of the court just putting it away and not even giving them a chance.

“She’s really starting to see the court much better. She’s taking care of business out there.”

The Indians struggled with their serving early, but didn’t have many problems on the scoreboard. They never trailed in the first game after grabbing a 6-4 lead, despite the fact that they gave Ansonia more than half of its points on eight service errors.

They controlled the game thanks mostly to Megan Wenning’s good serving as she led an 8-0 run to build a 14-5 lead. She served three aces during the stretch on the way to a match-high total of four.

The Tribe had no problems in the second game as it rolled out to leads of 11-3 and 19-6, and Gaerke led them to victory in the third game.

There was good serving news for Briscoe as the Indians committed just two service errors in the final two games.

“I told the girls that the game was mental,” said Briscoe, whose team hosts a tough Anna team tonight at 6 p.m. “We need to be as perfect as possible and improve each step of the way. In order to do that we have to have good serving and good passing, and we just came out not serving again.

“We have to bounce back and figure out how we’re going to come out strong. (Tonight) is going to be a big match for us. They need to come with their heads clear and on and ready to go.”

Post put up 21 assists, and added a team-best nine digs for the Indians. She finished with nine points, including three aces, three blocks and one kill.

Wenning led the team with 13 points, including her four aces. She also came up with seven digs.

Holly Stein had nine points and three kills, and Krystal Rammel notched four kills and three blocks. Rachel Brackman had eight digs, and Ciera Rammel followed with seven.

Ansonia struggled offensively all night, getting a team-best of just three kills from Lisa Goubeaux. She also had one block.

Jessica Evers finished with six points, and Stacie Lyme notched six assists.

“We needed to play some offense,” said Walters. “Our passing in the back row wasn’t what it should be ... therefore it’s really hard to get any offense. We really didn’t have many hits at all. ... Our hard hitters couldn’t hit through the blocks.”

Junior varsity

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team fought off Ansonia in the first game and dominated the second for a 25-20, 25-13 victory Monday.

The Tribe (6-1) led for most of the first game, but the Tigers rallied to pull even at 20. However, they would not score again as Fort Recovery pulled ahead and Lauren Wenning finished the game with back-to-back aces.

The Indians jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the second game, with Ansonia again making a run to get within 17-13. But the pattern was the same as the Tigers failed to score another point, and the Tribe ended the match on a kill from Jodi Tobe.

Abby Niekamp doubled everyone else on the court as she finished with 14 points, including five aces. She also put up 18 assists and had a pair of digs.

Wenning had six points, including three aces, and five kills, and Alicia Schwieterman notched six kills and two blocks. Sara Braun had five kills, and Tobe finished with three digs.[[In-content Ad]]
