Archers end Jay Co.'s season

HUNTINGTON — The Patriots could not buck the trend.
The Jay County High School baseball team lost to Fort Wayne South Side for the third time this season Saturday, dropping out of the Class 4A Sectional 6 tournament with an 11-1, semifinal defeat. It had lost a doubleheader to the Archers 13-0 in five innings and 8-1 on May 12.
South Side scored four times in the first inning and added two runs in the fifth. The Patriots (11-17) scored in the bottom of the fifth inning only to have the Archers post four runs in the top of the sixth.
Dustin Selvey suffered the loss, giving up six runs — four earned — on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five batters.
Chance Fuller doubled and scored the only JCHS run. Kyle Selvey was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Keenan James also had a hit.
Golfers place 17th
YORKTOWN — Jay County improved its score at The Players Club by 16 strokes, but still finished 17th out of 20 teams at Saturday’s Muncie Central Invitational.
The Patriots, who opened the season by shooting 391 at the Yorktown Invitational at TPC, posted a score of 375. No. 14 Noblesville finished at 310 to win the title by one stroke over 12th-ranked Pendleton Heights.
Evan Mathias had birdies for JCHS on the 506-yard, par-5 fourth hole and the 325-yard, par-4 17th. He also racked up eight pars on the way to shooting 82.
Carmel’s Andrew Havill picked up medalist honors with a 3-under-par 69.
Mitchel Rigby followed Mathias for Jay County with a 94, and Justen Keller shot 95. Adam Alfont completed the team score with a 104, and Dylan Friddle finished with a 105.
Fuller selected
Jay County High School senior Chance Fuller will play in the Indiana Elite North vs. South All-Star Baseball Challenge. His selection was announced Sunday.
Fuller, who has committed to play baseball at Anderson University next season, led the Patriots with 21 runs and 10 doubles this season. He finished with 24 hits for a .296 batting average and also drew a team-high 13 walks.
The All-Star challenge will be played June 23 and 24 at Decatur Central.
