Arnold 2nd midway through semifinals (06/17/04)

Local Roundup

Stephanie Arnold looks primed for a trip to the finals.

The rural Portland resident was in second place midway through the semifinal round of the U.S. Archery Olympic Trials in Mason, Ohio with 2,106 points. Jennifer Nichols of Cheyenne, Wyo., who also had the top score in the opening round, was first with 2,200 points, and Janet Dykman of El Monte, Calif. was third with 2,083.

Arnold completed eight of her 15 round-robin matches Wednesday, winning them all. She will finish the semifinal round with seven more matches today, and the top eight competitors will advance to Friday and Saturday’s final round.

She placed fourth in Tuesday’s opening round, behind Nichols, Dykman and Kendra Harvey of Rio Rancho, N.M. The athletes who garner the top four scores in the final round will earn a trip to the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.

Prescott leading

As the spring thoroughbred meet at Indiana Downs race track in Shelbyville comes to a close, there’s little doubt over who has been the track’s top jockey — Portland native Rodney Prescott.

Prescott, a veteran jockey who is a top rider at several tracks in Indiana and Kentucky, has been dominant during the current meet at Indiana Downs which ends on Sunday.

Prescott leads his fellow jockeys in wins (68), earnings of mounts ($561,000), starts (331), seconds (54) and thirds (49).

Joe Stokes, the No. 2 jockey in terms of wins during the meet which began April 16, has 48 wins — 20 fewer than Prescott’s total.

Prescott, who was a standout wrestler at Jay County High School, lives outside of Cincinnati in Bethel, Ohio, with his wife Beth and two children.
