Arnold 4th in opening round of Olympic Trials (06/16/04)

Jay County resident Stephanie Arnold had an excellent first day of competition at the U.S. Olympic Archery Trials in Mason, Ohio Tuesday. She was fourth in the women’s competition with a score of 1,232, just five points behind the second-place competitor.

Jennifer Nichols of Cheyenne, Wyo. was a solid first place with 1,302, with Kendra Harvey of Rio Rancho, N.M. second at 1,237 and Janet Dykman of El Monte, Calif. third at 1,235.

The field was cut from 40 to 16 after Tuesday’s competition in which each participant shot 144 arrows. They will compete in round-robin matches today and Thursday before cutting to eight archers for Friday and Saturday’s final round.

The top three finishers and one alternate will earn a trip to the 2004 Summer Olympic in Athens, Greece.

Girls hoops meeting

There will be a meeting of the Jay County Girls Basketball Club at the Jay Community Center Thursday at 7 p.m.

The meeting is open to any parents of girls basketball players who would like to attend. JCHS coach Kirk Comer will be discussing plans for his team’s summer fund-raising events.

Mayor’s golf outing

The inaugural Mayor’s Charity Golf Outing will be held Friday, July 16 at Portland Country Club.

It will be a four-person Florida Best-ball tournament with cash prizes for first-, second- and third-place teams.

There will also be several contests, including longest drive and closest to the pin.

The entry fee is $200 per team. Only the first 30 teams will be entered.
