Arnold, Smith boost Patriots (08/27/04)

Local Roundup

PORTLAND — Adam Arnold and Travis Smith seem to have figured it out. In what coach Barry Weaver called “redemption” for a difficult loss last week at Norwell, the No. 2 doubles pair rallied from a set down to give the Jay County boys tennis team a 3-2 victory over the Northeastern Knights Thursday.

Getting wins as usual from No. 1s Kurtis Hess and the team of Randy Evans and Tyler Rigby, the match was tied at 2-2 with Arnold and Smith left to decide it. They dropped the first set 7-5 to Bo Gard and Jacob Frame, but took the second 6-4 and the third 6-3 to win their fourth match in a row and give the Patriots the win.

The duo’s winning streak has improved it to 5-2 on the year.

Hess stayed perfect on the year at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Alex Nocton. He is now 7-0.

Evans and Rigby blasted Justin Stiner and Luke Frame at No. 1 doubles by a 6-0, 6-1 score. They are 4-0 in dual meets and 6-1 overall.

In other matches Jeff Sims dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Ben Alyea at No. 2 singles, and Joshua Ludy fell 6-0, 6-2 to Ross Alexander.

Jay County will play at Connersville Saturday at 10 a.m.

The Patriots lost 4-1 in junior varsity action to Northeastern Thursday.

Jason Crouch picked up the lone win at No. 1 singles, edging Max Price 9-7. James Heare lost 8-2 to Greg Meyer at No. 2 singles, and Thomas Shrack fell 8-1 to Mike McClure at No. 3 singles.

In doubles matches Todd and Thomas McCowan lost 8-3 to Aaron Johnson and John Sheehan, and Jared Shrack and Heare dropped by an 8-3 score to Kevin Toshclog and Shawn Stinson.

Starfires fall

BERNE — The South Adams volleyball team managed to fight back in the third game, but could not come all the way back from a two-game deficit in a 25-18, 25-20, 23-25, 25-21 loss to the Heritage Patriots Thursday.

The Starfires slipped to 1-6 overall with the defeat. They are 1-1 in the Allen County Athletic Conference.

Renee Neuenschwander paced South Adams with nine kills and 13 digs. She also had a pair of aces.

Robyn Habegger finished with nine digs, eight kills and three aces. Lacy Rhoades added nine digs, Brooke Fox had three blocks, and Alyssa Miller put up 27 assists.

The Starfire junior varsity team won the opening game, but fell to a 23-25, 25-23, 25-13 loss.

They also lost by a 25-13, 25-17 tally in freshman action.

Patriots blast Delta

PORTLAND — After back-to-back losses — including a 10-0 defeat to Noblesville, currently ranked No. 20 in the state — the Jay County boys soccer team was looking for a spark. It came in a big way against the Delta Eagles Thursday.

The Patriots got four points from Sergio Woo as they destroyed the visiting Eagles 10-0.

Woo assisted on the third goal of the first half, a score by Chad Keen, and scored the final one on his own. His goal with just under four minutes to go before halftime on an assist from Drew Schoenherr gave Jay County a 4-0 lead.

He also assisted to Keen again on the second goal of the second half, and posted the final score with about six minutes to play.

Joining Woo and Keen with a two-goal effort was Trent Bailey, who posted a pair of goals in the second half. Scott “Scooter” Bruggeman, Dustin Fox, Luke McClung and Josh Thornburg each scored once.

Mason Shreve also had an assist.

Bailey and Derek Mills combined for the shutout, making four and five saves respectively.

Jay County will host Connersville Tuesday at 5 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
