UNION CITY — This could get old quickly for the Union City Indians. But not for Jay County.

Trent Bailey set a new school record for 3-pointers in a single game, hitting nine as he scored a career-high 29 points in the Patriots’ 83-49 destruction of host Union City Friday night.

Bailey became the third Jay County player to break the record in the past three seasons, and made it two years in a row against Union City.

Kevin Bruggeman held the mark for just a day short of a year, having hit for eight 3-pointers against Union City at home Feb. 21, 2003. Before that Matt Wendel held the record with seven triples at Connersville in 2002.

“It feels great,” said Bailey. “I’ve got an adrenaline rush right now.

“I’ve been coming out to do this all year. I just finally had my game. I got hot.”

That would be an understatement.

Bailey hit six of his eight 3-point tries in the first half as he racked up 20 points before the intermission. He hit his seventh triple less than two minutes into the second half with a ridiculous fade-way shot from the left wing with a defender breathing down his neck.

The junior tied Bruggeman’s mark with another shot from the left side on an assist from Heath Williams with 3:02 to play in the third quarter.

Bailey would miss his first chance at the record with two minutes to play in the quarter, but not his second.

A minute into the final period Williams brought the ball down the floor and set up the offense. He passed to Alberson on the right wing, who in turn found Bailey coming around a screen at the top of the key.

Bailey wasted no time in tossing up his 13th attempt and the record-breaking hoop went down with 6:58 on the clock. He missed his final 3-point try, finishing 9-of-14 from long distance as he led four Patriot players in double figures.

“My teammates just got me open,” said Bailey. “They were able to get me good screens and I just got my shot off.”

“A couple shots he just hit because he was hot,” said Jay County coach Craig Teagle, congratulating Bailey on setting the new mark. “I’m really happy how we executed offensively.”

Jay County never had any problems, leading 17-8 after one quarter and increasing the margin to 37-19 at halftime. It allowed 18 points in the third quarter, but scored 26 of its own as it pulled away for the big win.

Dustin Overton scored 14 points for the Patriots and added nine rebounds. Mark Kelly and Corey Comer trailed Bailey and Overton even though they were perfect.

Comer went 5-of-5 from the field and 2-for-2 at the line for 12 points, and Kelly was 3-of-3 from the field and 4-for-4 at the line for 10 points.

“For no longer than Kelly and Comer were on the floor, they did a great job,” said Teagle. “We did a lot more inside-out in the second half.”

Heath Williams finished second to Overton with six rebounds, and also dished out seven assists. Six of his assists went to Bailey.

Union City (8-11) had just one player in double figures, but he was a big one.

Nic Lahey went 10-of-14 from the field, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range — for 26 points. Darryl Stott was next with eight points.

No Union City player had more than three rebounds as the Patriots owned a 30-19 advantage on the glass.

Last season’s victory over the Indians was the second in a run of seven straight wins which took Jay County to the regional championship game. They hope to get the same kind of streak going to end the 2003-04 campaign.

“Coach really presses for us to improve all through the season,” said Bailey. “He just wants our best game to be our last game. He wants us to play our best at sectional time.”

The Patriots will try to continue that effort when they visit Eastbrook tonight at 6 p.m.

Jay County was in bad shape for three quarters, but rallied in the fourth for a 27-26 victory over Union City.

The Patriots trailed 25-17 heading into the final period, but methodically chipped away at the deficit. Tyler Dunnington finally put Jay County ahead with a 3-pointer at the 2:07 mark of the fourth quarter, and neither team scored the rest of the way.

Dunnington paced the Patriots with 10 points. Zac Green had six, and John Retter finished with four.

Ramey Turner put in 13 points for Union City, although the team managed just one point in the entire fourth quarter. Aaron Wilcox and Michael Lloyd each added four.[[In-content Ad]]
