Bantz resigns as Jay cross country coach (08/01/2008)

JCHS cross country

By By RAY COONEY-

Just a few days before the start of fall practice, the Patriots are looking for a new cross country coach.

Les Bantz, who had coached the team for three seasons, resigned from the position Tuesday. Official practice for most JCHS fall sports begins Monday.

"It's going to be a great group of girls and boys this year," said Bantz in a phone interview Thursday. "They've run more miles than ever this summer. But I am not the coach anymore."

Bantz would not offer a reason for his resignation. He met with the teams Wednesday night to discuss the situation.

JCHS athletics director Phil Ford said he was shocked when Bantz called him and resigned from the job.

"I was as surprised as anyone when I got the call," he said, "disappointed and surprised.

"He's exceptionally knowledgeable. He has a real passion for that sport and he works very hard at it. He loves the kids. He's a man of integrity."

Ford said the job will be posted and he hopes to have it filled as soon as possible. In the interim, assistant coach Lea Selvey will meet with the team for practice.

The Patriots won sectional championships in girls cross country in each of the last two seasons with Bantz at the helm.

They were also semi-state qualifiers in each of those years.

"It was a great experience," said Bantz, who was also the JCHS girs track coach for one season and assistant girls track coach for two years. "I had a great time. It was a great bunch of kids. I think Jay County is a great place.

"I wish them the greatest success."
