Bats awaken for FR softball (04/06/05)
Local Roundup
FORT RECOVERY — After a couple of one-run losses in a row the Indians were ready to wake up the bats.
Fort Recovery’s softball team ripped 11 hits Tuesday to pull back to .500 with a 7-5 victory over the Houston Wildcats.
Kristen Schwieterman, Tiff Gaerke and Renee Evers each had a pair of hits for the Tribe, which trailed 3-2 after two innings before scoring twice in the fourth, twice in the fifth and once in the sixth to take the lead for good.
Schwieterman tripled for the Tribe, and also had two runs, one stolen base and one RBI. Gaerke had a double, two RBIs and a run, and Evers stole a base and scored once.
Krystal Rammel and Ciera Rammel each had a double, a run and an RBI, and Brenda Rindler also scored once and drove in a run.
Alyssa Tobe picked up the win, allowing five runs on 10 hits. She struck out five and walked three.
Stars drop opener
WINCHESTER — Justin Caffee gave the South Adams baseball team just the kind of leadership any coach would want from his top returning senior. He just didn’t get quite enough help.
Caffee was outstanding on the mound and did the most damage at the plate, but the Starfires still lost their season opener to the Winchester Golden Falcons 2-1 Tuesday.
Winchester managed just four hits and one unearned run as Caffee got the start. He struck out nine batters and walked only three.
He also went 1-for-3 at the plate and drove in lead-off hitter Rich Kaup for his team’s only run in the first inning.
But, the Golden Falcons scored once in the third inning and once in the fourth while holding the Starfires scoreless the rest of the way to get the win.
Lima tops FR baseball
LIMA, Ohio — Dusty Guggenbiller had another solid game, but three errors leading to three unearned runs proved enough to stop the Fort Recovery baseball team in a 5-3 loss to the Lima Senior Spartans Tuesday.
The Indians (3-3) never led in the game, giving up three runs in the second inning to fall behind 4-1. Lima Senior scored once more in the sixth before the Tribe posted two runs in the top of the seventh for the final margin.
Freshman Clint Tobe suffered the loss, giving up five runs — two earned — on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out four and did not issue a walk.
Guggenbiller, a senior, finished with a double, a walk, a run and an RBI. He had four RBIs in Monday’s victory.
Sean Kahlig, who hit his first career home run Monday, added an RBI double.
FR JV stumbles

Lima Senior scored its 12 runs on just five hits, taking advantage of seven walks, a couple of Indian errors and one hit batsman.
