Bearcats top Jay County (05/05/04)

Jay County Roundup

The story of the Jay County baseball season held true Tuesday as the Patriots couldn’t put together enough offense to stay with the Muncie Central Bearcats in a 7-2 defeat.

Jay County had seven hits, but managed just two third-inning runs. It did have a 2-1 lead at that point, but Muncie Central scored three times in the bottom of the third, twice in the fourth and once in the fifth to take control.

Mike Smith slipped to 3-2 on the year in the defeat, allowing seven runs — five earned — on nine hits in five innings. He struck out one and walked one.

Chad Keen tossed one scoreless inning of relief as the Patriots fell to 5-7.

Heath Williams picked up two of the Jay County hits, and had its only extra-base hit with a double. He scored one run.

Trent Bailey singled and scored the other run, and Keen had a single and a stolen base. Adam Brandt, Mike Alberson and Eric Somers each added one hit.

The Patriots will visit Anderson Highland for a double-header Saturday at 11 a.m.

Chiefs trample HC

Amanda Johnson and Cody Sutton each came away with a trio of wins Tuesday as the East Jay track teams rolled over Hartford City.

The girls team cruised to a 78-22 victory, and the boys team won a 53.5-43.5 decision.

She teamed with Erika Hunt, Sara Mescher and Betsy Knittle to take the 4x400-meter relay in 5:03.58.

Sutton and Muhlenkamp joined Edwin Clott and Lance Franklin to win the 4x400-meter relay in 4:20.34.

The East Jay boys B team got just two victories in a 68-27 loss to Hartford City Tuesday.
