Bellmont beats JCHS girls soccer

The Patriots missed their chance to move back above .500.
Jay County High School’s girls soccer team fell behind in the first half Thursday and couldn’t recover in a 2-1 loss to the visiting Bellmont Squaws.
Bellmont (3-5) took the lead with a goal at the 25:50 mark of the first half. It extended that advantage to two goals less than five minutes into the second.
Jay County (4-5) got its only goal of the game at the 29:05 mark of the second half when Catherine Dunn sent a crossing pass just outside the 18-yard line. Freshman Gabbie Mann was there to take the assist and score her team-best sixth goal of the season.
Amber Huelskamp took two shots on goal for the Patriots, and Sammi Compton, Mann and Dunn each added one.
Brooke Reynard finished with two saves.
Jay County got goals from Lacy Chowning and Sarah Newton in the junior varsity game, but lost 4-2.

Bruins top spikers
HARTFORD CITY — The Jay County volleyball team slipped to 4-13 on the season with a 25-19, 25-16, 25-18 loss Thursday to the host Blackford Bruins.
Hannah Ainsworth, the Patriots’ only senior, totaled 11 assists, 11 digs and three aces in the defeat. Malarie Houck had seven digs and four points, Kylie Osborne notched seven kills and Bre McIntire added six kills.

Courtney Finnerty had 15 service points, including six aces, and four digs to lead the JCHS junior varsity team to a 25-14, 25-22 win. Faith Parr added 13 service points and five aces, and Jessica Kerrigan put up six assists.

Boys soccer loses
DECATUR — The Patriots fell behind by a goal in the opening half on the way to a 4-3 loss Thursday to the host Bellmont Braves.
Alex Dunn and Nathan Heitkamp each scored goals for Jay County (5-6) in the first half, but the Braves (5-5) got goals from Grant Ainsworth, Holland Herman and Andy Hess for a 3-2 lead. Each team scored once in the second half, with Dunn tallying his second goal of the game for the Patriots on an assist from Jared Schlosser.
Herman had two assists, including one in the second half to Taylor Schultz, in addition to his goal.

Reynolds leads 8th
Ian Reynolds scored twice Thursday to lead the East Jay Middle School eighth grade football team to a 44-12 victory over West Side (Union City). The seventh grade game ended in a 12-12 tie.
Reynolds scored on runs of 6 yards in the first quarter and 60 yards in the third for the EJMS eighth graders. Dylan Martin, Tyler Leonhard and Alex Lewis also had TDs for the Chiefs, and Brant Pearson notched two interceptions.
East Jay took the lead with 20 seconds left in the seventh grade game, but West Side returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to forge the tie. Ethan Myers and Jade Smith each scored TDs for the Chiefs.[[In-content Ad]]
