Big 2nd half, great defense propel JC (01/03/04)
JCHS boys basketball
PORTLAND — Talk about a tale of two halves.
Jay County scored 13 points in the first half. In the second it had 38.
In the first half the Patriots were 0-of-3 at the foul line. In the second they were 15-for-20.
In the first half they scored only two points in the first 10 minutes. In the second they averaged more than two points every minute.
And the one constant throughout Friday night’s boys basketball game was the Jay County Patriots’ outstanding defense as they smacked the Shenandoah Raiders 51-27.
“I think we’ve been pretty good defensively all year, and tonight we were outstanding,” said Jay County coach Craig Teagle. “We did a great job with there perimeter shooters.”
Shenandoah coach Aaron Cain couldn’t disagree.
“I’ll give that one to Jay County,” he said. “They just flat handed it to us.
“They played us very physical, very tough man defense. I just didn’t think we matched their intensity in a smart way.
“It’s hard to find positives right now.”
The Raiders scored just 12 points in the second half, shooting 4-of-30 from the field against the stifling Jay County defense. They hardly ever got a good look as they finished 11-of-45 (24 percent) from the field and 3-of-12 (25 percent) from the foul line.
Nearly half of their shots were from 3-point range, but they missed all but two of their 21 long-distance tries.
The Patriots also racked up seven blocked shots, including two each by Dustin Overton and Mark Kelly.
“The whole team played great defense the whole game,” said Jay County junior Trent Bailey, who nearly matched the entire Shenandoah team with his 25 points. “This was our best defensive game. If we can keep that up, it’s going to be hard for the other teams to get good shots.”
Neither team saw many good shots early on, with the game starting as a battle of scoring futility. The first basket did not come until the Raiders’ Jeremiah Smith scored with 2:21 in the first quarter.
To that point Shenandoah was 0-for-4 with a turnover, and Jay County was 0-for-5 with a turnover. There had been five substitutions, and the Raiders had already taken a time out.
It took the Patriots 5:58 before finally getting on the board with a Bailey bucket. It took them another 4:06 before they scored again, and they trailed 15-13 at halftime thanks to a fast-break lay-up at the buzzer by Justin Fox.
Smith led the Raiders with 11 points, and Fox finished with seven. Four different players tied for a team-high with four rebounds.
But everything changed after the intermission.
Jay County (4-1) scored the first nine points of the second half, six of which came on a pair of Bailey 3-pointers. He hit another triple with 47 seconds to go in the third quarter, and just missed on a fourth only to have Overton get a tip-in at the buzzer for a 27-19 lead.
The final period was more of the same as the Patriots put together runs of 9-0, 9-0, 8-0 and 7-0 after halftime. In all they outscored Shenandoah 38-12 after halftime.
“We just weren’t running good offense at all in the first half,” said Bailey of the change. “We started working the ball into the post. It opens more things up when we do that.
“I just started to feel it. I was a little cold at the beginning of the game. I just made a couple of shots and got confident.”
Bailey finished with four 3-pointers for Jay County, and was also 5-for-5 from the foul line. Overton was next with eight points while grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds.
Kelly finished with five points and seven rebounds. Chad Keen had three assists.
“I thought we showed more poise (in the second half),” said Teagle. “We attacked the basket when it was there, otherwise we ran our offense.
“Trent getting the hot hand really changed what they had to do to us defensively.”

Jay County’s inability to score in the fourth quarter destroyed its comeback try in a 31-25 defeat to Shenandoah.
The Patriots closed the gap after trailing 15-8 at halftime, trailing by just three points heading into the final period. However, they did not score in the fourth quarter until John Retter laid the ball in with 2:03 left, and by that time it was far too late.
Retter paced Jay County with eight points, and Tyler Dunnington finished with seven. Scott “Scooter” Bruggeman scored four points.
Alan Forman led Shenandoah with 11 points in the winning effort. Chad Becker added five points.[[In-content Ad]]
