UNION CITY — Twenty-plus years of history is hard to erase.
The Union City Indians looked primed to make a run at their first boys basketball victory over Jay County since 1984. But the Patriots ran away in the fourth quarter, handing the home team a familiar double-digit defeat by a 62-45 final.
After falling behind by one following a Darryl Stott steal early in the fourth quarter, Jay County (13-5) scored 14 points in a row. It went on a 24-3 run over a span of seven minutes, turning a once close game into an early exit for some fans.
The Patriots were about as close to perfect as can be expected in the final period, hitting 7-of-8 from the field and 9-of-11 from the free-throw line.
“That’s how you finish games,” said JCHS coach Craig Teagle, whose team has four straight double-digit wins over the Indians. “I’m pretty proud of the kids.
“It’s a good win. Any time you win on the road it’s a good win.”
Stott, Union City’s star running back in football, hounded Patriot point guard Scott “Scooter” Bruggeman during stretches in the second half and came up with a big steal and lay-up early in the fourth quarter. His score gave the Indians a 39-38 lead, but the advantage was short-lived.
On the other end, Luke Goetz drove to the bucket to start Jay County’s furious run to the finish. Bruggeman added a couple of free throws, Corey Comer scored off a Bruggeman assist and Randy Evans drove for a lay-up, forcing Union City coach Dave Marshall to call a timeout with 5:30 to go.
But the stoppage of play did nothing to halt the Patriots, who scored another six consecutive points before Stott finally hit a free throw to stop the run.
Union City (12-8) missed some good looks during the stretch, and hurt itself at the foul line. After hitting nine of its first 11 free throws, the Indians missed four in a row — two on the front end of one-and-one opportunities.
“Give Jay County a lot of credit,” said Union City coach Dave Marshall. “All their kids that we saw on the floor tonight both games, they all execute, they all guard people and they make you pay if you miss free throws and you miss some easy shots.”
Corey Comer made the Indians pay throughout, scoring nine points in each half for a game-high 18. He shot 7-of-13 from the field, including a make on his only 3-point attempt, and was 3-of-4 from the foul line.
He was also the game’s top rebounder, leading Jay County to a 39-29 advantage on the glass.
“Corey just did a fantastic job,” said Teagle “I thought he was focused. I thought he just came in and played outstanding — offensively, on the boards and defensively. He was very, very solid.”
Comer scored four points as the Patriots pushed out to a 9-3 start and a 17-10 lead after the opening quarter. But Union City reclaimed the lead as it scored the first eight points of the second period, including a three-point play by Andy Lea and a 3-pointer from Stott.
The teams traded the advantage several times over the second and third quarters before the Patriots stormed away in the fourth.
Tyler Rigby and Bruggeman joined Comer in double figures with 15 and 10 points respectively, and each finished with three assists. Rigby got all of his on 3-pointers, finished 5-of-10 from beyond the arc.
Five different Patriots grabbed at least five rebounds as their advantage on the glass was built mainly in the first few minutes and during the fourth quarter explosion. Bruggeman and Zac Green each had seven rebounds, Rigby grabbed six and John Retter finished with five.
“We challenged our kids. We felt like early we didn’t go to the boards and then late we didn’t go to the boards. Jay County’s great at if they have a little bit of the lead they take care of the boards and they take care of the ball.”
Stott was excellent in spurts as he led the Indians with 11 points. He also shared the game high of three assists and grabbed seven rebounds.
Aaron Wilcox had nine points and eight rebounds for Union City. Taylor Jenkinson added eight points, and Andy Lea had seven points and seven boards.
