Bihn leads team effort as FR tops Blackhawks (12/08/03)

John “Bear” Bihn was a one-man wrecking machine, and he got plenty of help from his teammates as the Fort Recovery boys basketball team got a 58-36 victory over the Mississinawa Valley Blackhawks Saturday.

Bihn racked up 15 points and 15 rebounds, shooting 6-of-12 from the field in the game. His effort led the team to 55 percent shooting on the evening in the blowout win.

Bihn also nearly matched the entire Mississinawa Valley team on the glass, as the Blackhawks grabbed just 16 boards.

Fort Recovery (1-1) had just a one-point lead at halftime, but played stifling defense in the second half to pull away. It held the Blackhawks to six points in each of the final two quarters.

Mississinawa Valley shot just 2-of-18 from the field in the second half, and finished the game shooting 22 percent from the field.

Dusty Tobe trailed Bihn for the Indians, shooting 5-of-8 to finished with 12 points. He also had six rebounds.

Greg Faller scored nine points and had three assists. C.J. Tobe and Bihn also had three assists, and Bihn also notched two steals and one block.

Travis Brunk had 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals for Mississinawa Valley. Brian Hunt and Kyle Linder scored 10 points as well.

Fort Recovery also played Friday night, suffering a 51-45 loss on the road against the Kalida Wildcats.

Kalida (1-0) shot just 2-of-13 from the field in the second half, but outscored the Indians 14-8 in the final period to break a tie after three quarters. The Wildcats did most of their damage from the foul line, shooting 16-for-24 in the second half and 22-of-32 for the game.

Fort Recovery attempted just seven foul shots in the contest.

Dusty Tobe led a balanced Tribe scoring effort with 10 points. He was also the top Indian with eight rebounds and four assists.

C.J. Tobe and Bihn each had nine points, and Faller followed with eight. Tyler Wuebker and Faller each grabbed nine rebounds, and Faller and Bihn had two assists apiece.

Rick Schnipke carried Kalida with 19 points and seven rebounds. Cody Maxwell scored nine points.

Fort Recovery’s next outing will be at home Friday when it hosts Jay County at 6:30 p.m.

Fort JV splits pair

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity squad clobbered Mississinawa Valley Saturday 60-36.

The teams were tied after one quarter of play, but the Indians put up 19-point quarters in the second and fourth for the dominating win.

Ryan Staugler led three Indians in double figures with 14 points. Tyler Thobe and Todd Post each had 11 points, and Seth Bihn scored nine.

Staugler and Jason VanSkyock each pulled down eight rebounds.

Dusty Lyons had 13 points and three boards for Mississinawa Valley, and Kurt Moneysmith had 10 points and four rebounds.

The Tribe lost its opener Friday against Kalida 46-39. The Indians struggled in that game to a 37 percent shooting night while the Wildcats shot 51 percent.

Thobe led the team with 11 points. Staugler had seven points, three rebounds and three steals.

Jake Hermiller scored 12 points for Kalida, and Tyler Heitmeyer had 10 points and seven rebounds.

High rollers win again

The Jay County Blue Jay High Rollers topped Norwell Saturday by the total pin tiebreaker after finishing in a 10-10 tie.

Derek Powell led the team with a 441 series. Cody Wright had a personal-best 407 series, and Preston Shoopman had a high game of 226.

The junior varsity team won 19-1 over Heritage with Ryan Brotherton rolling a 359 series.

Jay 2nd at Super Duals

Jay County’s wrestling team finished second at the Anderson Highland Super Duals Saturday, finishing 4-1 behind the undefeated host Scots.

The Patriots (6-5) scored wins over Sheridan, Madison-Grant, Shenandoah and Wapahani, but lost to Anderson Highland 66-6.

Bill Spahr was a perfect 5-0 on the day and had two pins. Tyler Bash went 4-1 with three pins, and Kurtis Hess had the quick pin of the day in 20 seconds.

JC struggles at relays

The Jay County swim teams took part in the Lawrence North Relays Saturday, placing sixth in the overall competition. The girls team placed fifth while the boys were sixth.

The top finish for Jay County came in the 500-yard mixed freestyle relay. Vanessa Wilkins, Amber Kelly, Joseph Vormohr and Matt Peterson teamed to place second in 4:35.90.

WJ falls to Wilson

The West Jay boys basketball teams had a rough time in the first quarter Saturday, losing a pair of games to Muncie Wilson.

The eighth grade team got outscored 19-3 in the first quarter on the way to a 60-28 defeat. The seventh grade team also allowed 19 first-quarter points in a 50-31 loss.

Luke Goetz paced the eighth grade Eagles with 12 points. Dustin Fox scored six, and Chris Moore had four.

Blake Price scored 15 points to lead the seventh graders, and Brady Mills had 10.[[In-content Ad]]
